For golfers who have shot an Eagle before, now is their chance to compete in the 10th edition of Golf Malaysia Eagles Championship at the challenging 6,005 metres Kelab Golf Perkhidmatan Awam, Damansara, Kuala Lumpur.
The Golf Malaysia Eagles Championship is for golfers who had achieved an eagle during their rounds in Malaysia and subsequently registered with Golf Malaysia Magazine.

The tournament will be played under the Stableford format based on four division namely for men with handicap from 12 and below (Division A) from handicap 18 to 13 (Division B) and from 19 and above (Division C). The Ladies will make up the fourth category.
The top five finishers in each category will be rewarded with an array of luxurious prizes while the hole-in-one winner will drive home a Tiggo car courtesy of Chery Alado. Each participants will also receive the branded Lyle & Scott polo shirt with a special Eagle emblem on it.

Past champions returning to soar for the titles are Han Choong Ching (3) who previously shot 43 points to win the A-Medal and 1st runner-up Shafie Hj Mohd Noor (11). Yau Wai Heng (22) who won with 36 points will defend his C-Medal crown and the ladies division will see Ann Tan (14) aiming to hold tight to her title.

TOURNAMENT OVERVIEW

Golf Malaysia’s Crazy 30 Championship provides the ultimate golf experience. Now in its 30th year, Golf Malaysia Magazine wants everyone – from scratch golfers to players that hold a handicap of 30 – to test their nerves and golf skills and probably some fluke shots. This event offers 18 holes of intense competition with 30 Novelty Hole Contests. It may sound crazy but then again, this is Golf Malaysia’s Craziest golf event that is unlike any other!

The championship’s pulse is its 30 Novelty contests, and this tournament is sure to be affectionately remembered as the Golf Malaysia’s Crazy 30 Championship – the event with the largest number of novelty events in the world!

Entry Qualification

Open to all amateur golfers with an established handicap. Priority will be given to golfers who are subscribers to Golf Malaysia Magazine! The deadline for tournament entries is 2 July 2010. Register early to guarantee your spot!

Divisions

The tournament field will consist of the Men’s and the Ladies’ division. The Men’s divisions will be further divided into three categories: A Division (handicap 12 and below); B Division (handicap 13-19) and C Division (handicap 20-24). The Ladies’ Division is for those with a handicap of 30 and below.

Format of Play / Programme of the Day

The mode of play is Stableford. The tournament will begin at 8:00 am on a shotgun start, unless otherwise decided by the organiser. Final course assignments will be distributed at the time of tournament registration.

Buggy / Caddie

Players are required to ride in a cart assigned to them. Each cart will be assigned with one caddie. Spectators are allowed on the course, but they are prohibited from interfering with play.

The 30 Novelties Challenge

The ball that lies nearest or on the target area/line (demarcated) at each hole will be recorded. There will be three winners for each Novelty contest.

Prizes / Awards

The tournament features THREE competitive divisions (A, B and C) for the Men and ONE division for the Ladies. The person who is 30th overall (Gross) shall be Golf Malaysia’s Crazy 30 Championship’s GRAND WINNER!

Ties

Ties for prizes will be broken using countback of the last 9, last 6, last 3 and last hole and then based on the lowest handicap. If the tie is not broken, the same system will be applied to the first 9.

Rules of Play

The R&A Rules of Golf will govern play. Local rules of Kota Permai Golf & Country Club will apply.

Club Champions of Clearwater Sanctuary are the 2010 Champions

Mohd Shanizam Mohagi (handicap 0) and Janice Ling Hui Shin (13), the club champions of Clearwater Sanctuary Golf Resort in Batu Gajah, Perak, created history when they emerged victorious in their respective categories at the 2010 Golf Malaysia Champion of Champions Championship.

For the first time in twenty-four editions of this prestigious amateur tournament, club champions won on their home ground.

Mohd Shanizam’s victory came after a nail-biting three-way play-off with John Pang (3) and K. Murughan (5), after all three carded a total of 151 strokes over 36 holes.

Leading by two strokes up to the 16th hole on the second and last day of the championship, Mohd Shanizam said he was nervous during the play-off, which was his first. “Luckily I managed to control my nerves during the play-off. It was an unforgettable moment and I broke the tradition of not having the host win the championship.”


Pang, who edged out Murughan for the runner-up spot, related his experience during the thrilling play-off: “On the first play-off hole, I thought my ball would fall in for a birdie but unfortunately it didn’t. And on the second hole, I became more nervous since Hole No. 9 is considered one of the toughest par-4 holes on the course. Sad to say, I bogeyed the hole and the championship went to Shanizam.”


Murughan, however, was happy after his sixth play-off. He revealed: “I was not nervous at all during the play-off, but I pushed my tee shot to the right and ended up with a double bogey. Anyway, that’s all part of golf. I am just happy I played better than yesterday – much better!”


Overnight leader Sameer Raj Kukreja (4) from Titiwangsa Golf Club faltered in day two, carding a lacklustre 82 to finish fifth, one stroke behind Jimmy Chia Kee Joo (1) from Kota Permai Golf & Country Club, who shot identical 76s.

The Ladies’ Champion category was also witness to tense competition. Janice, who trailed eventual runner-up Sharon Lau May Yen (4) by two strokes when the second day started, came back with a respectable 3-over 75 to win the title by three shots.


“My putting finally came in. I was not that good off the tee but my short game saved me a lot,” Janice confided. “After knowing that I am the champion, I felt so relieved because I was under a lot of pressure and was also very nervous. I am also very happy now and would like to thank my parents and my coach, Terry Adcock, for guiding me to where I am now.”


The youngest player of the field, Sarfina Serethran (11) from Bukit Jalil Golf & Country Resort, was satisfied with shooting 79 and 81 for a 160.


“Being third is not bad at all. I could have done better but many of my putts lipped out. I will definitely try again next year,” said the 13-year-old Sarfina.


Seasoned golfer Datuk AS Khamis (7) won the Seniors’ Champions category after collecting a total of 165 over two days. This category was introduced for the first time in this annual tournament as a special treat in conjunction with Golf Malaysia Magazine’s 30th anniversary.

“It feels great to be the champion among the champions! And this championship is a true test of skill, patience and perseverance, as the course is playing long for us in the Seniors’ category,” said this champion from Nilai Springs Golf & Country Club. “To us, there is no par-4: all are par-5 and above! I ended up having to use my driver and 3-wood all the time.”

Battle for the Champion of Champions 2010 Title

The exciting, the biggest and the most prestigious amateur event in Malaysia is here again!

For the 24th time, Golf Malaysia Champion of Champions Championship will be staged and excitement is definitely mounting. This is THE event that has seen many of its winners, who were club champions, then turned professional and made their mark on regional and international golf scene, such as Roni Lim, P. Gunasegaran, Wong Hung Nung, Irene Yeoh and Cindy Lee. Perhaps the most popular figures are Lim Siew Ai, who is currently playing in the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) circuit in the US, and Khor Kheng Hwai, an Asian Tour touring professional.

The 2010 edition of this impressive two-day championship will again take place at the breathtaking Clearwater Sanctuary Golf Resort in Batu Gajah, Perak. Last year, this 6,482-metre, par-72 championship course was witness to brilliant golf by teenagers Mohd Azman of Bukit Jawi Golf Resort and Kelly Tan of Bukit Banang Golf Club, who captured the coveted Men’s Champion and Ladies’ Champion trophies respectively.

“It is an absolute pleasure for us to welcome the champion participants once again to our resort. I believe this tournament has a long line of history of making the players work hard to earn their title, including instances of a sudden-death play-off to determine the winner,” says Kenny Yap, the executive director of Clearwater Sanctuary Golf Resort.

“We hope the participants will have an enjoyable time in Perak. Our golf course is in its very good shape in spite of the dry season that we are experiencing now. We think the competition is going to be outstanding and very stiff, considering that the players are club champions from all over the nation.”

As a special treat in conjunction with Golf Malaysia Magazine’s 30th anniversary, a new Seniors’ Champion category will be introduced in this tournament, in addition to the existing Men’s Champion and Ladies’ Champion categories. Among those who have confirmed their participation in this brand-new division are Damai Laut Golf Club’s Ahmad Tarmizi Yusuf, Mohd Salleh Hassan of Royal Pahang Golf Club, Hj Mohd Salleh Sulaiman of Seri Mahkota Golf Club and Haji Hamdan Zambahari.

“I’m happy to be the Seniors’ Champion of three golf clubs and I will try my best to play well in this tournament,” says Haji Hamdan, who will be playing under the Kota Permai Golf & Country Club’s banner.

In the Men’s Champion division, expect a close battle between seasoned players such as Palm Garden GC’s Wong Pau San, Kota Permai GCC’s Jimmy Chia, Damai Laut GCC’s Wan Kamaruzzaman and Kelab Golf Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah’s Tan Vi Kung, along with Singapore’s Sham Chee Keong of Sembawang CC and Mimi Ho of Changi Golf Club.

Past conquerors of the Ladies’ Division at Golf Malaysia Champion of Champions Championship, like Datin Rahmah Arshad of Kelab Golf Negara Subang, June Yap of Kuala Lumpur GCC, Ireen Teng of Tropicana GCR and Palm Resort GC’s Marilyn Tan, will race for the top honour alongside last year’s runner-up Khairunhanisah Azlan Hanif of Kota Permai GCC.

Participants who attain the best Gross score over 36 holes in each of the three categories will be declared the champion of his or her division. Top ten finishers in the Men’s Champion category and top five finishers in both the Ladies’ Champion and the Seniors’ Champion divisions will be awarded fantastic prizes and certificate of merit.

Apart from Gross winners, the overall best Nett scorer over the two days of tournament will also be presented with great prizes.
