Sarawak Golfers Get the Irons Experience

In perfect weather condition, from the driving range and putting green to their tee boxes, a field of ninety-nine happy golfers, armed with their secret weapons - their polished set of irons - had good hopes and one goal: ‘Have Fun’.

On the course, Zakaria Hussaini (13), Balbir Singh (17) and Joseph Nyalau (20) skilfully negotiated their way through the 5,839-metre of Sarawak Club Golf Resort’s Garden and Jungle nines to win a host of prizes, including MASwings’s sponsored holiday packages to Kota Kinabalu/Sandakan, Kota Kinabalu/Kuching and Kuching/Miri respectively.

For Zakaria, his victory in the A Division can never be sweeter when he came out tops by beating Awang Mazlan (7) on countback, after both carded an outstanding score of 38 Stableford points.

“It was one of my best games ever! I just bought an iron set yesterday and tried it today, without bringing them to the driving range. It really worked for me. I just came back to playing about two months ago after laying off golf for eight months. It was worth it,” he gushed, beaming with delight.

Among his many spoils were a voucher from Transview Golf worth RM600, a Nature Valley Crunchy Granola Bar hamper and a Green Magma Barley hamper.

Three players, Chian Chan Jee (13), Ibrahim Mokarat (12) and Danny Wee Bee Soon (10), posted 36 points to complete the top five spots when they were awarded the third, fourth and fifth places respectively upon countback.

In the B Division, 17-handicapper Balbir Singh materialised his goal to become the champion of the group with a score of 35 points. He was one ahead of runner-up James Chuo To Sui (16).

Joseph Nyalau (20) accumulated a total of 35 points to be crowned the C Division champion. Tailing two points behind Joseph were a quartet of players who each carded 33 points. Upon countback, Addy Anyut (24), Muyang Kamundan (21), Peter Usang Sagan (22) and Zulkiflie Latif (24) took the second, third, fourth and fifth spot respectively.

The Ladies’ division was won by Susan Toh Sik Tin (27), who shot 28 points. Pauline Gan (29) carded 26 points to claim the second place. Lau Ting Lee (25) and Daisy Kon Mui Kim (24) closed with 25 points each to end at third and fourth position respectively.

In the Invitational category, eight-handicapper Then Su Yew’s accumulations of 38 points got him the title while Jimmy Tan (7) came second at 37 points.

In the novelty contest of the Longest Drive at Hole 4, Awang Mazlan had a solid blast with a distance of 218 metres. For his effort, he took home a cash voucher worth RM400 for him to shop at any Transview Golf outlets. Jackie Chiam proved most accurate in the Nearest-to-Pin battle, when he fired an iron to within two feet and nine inches. Chow Tung Leh guided his shot to win the Nearest-to-Line duel, while Dylan Tan’s sprayed shot on the par-3 third hole got him the prize of being nearest to the bunker at two feet and eight inches.

In all, the Maruman-Golf Malaysia Irons Challenge was a ton of fun as the golfers had a blast, and fared pretty well on the course as well.

Maruman-Golf Malaysia Irons Challenge in Sarawak

Fancy playing a round of 18 holes with just your irons?

Here’s your chance to compete in the Maruman-Golf Malaysia Irons Challenge! Designed to test the skills of both seasoned golfers and beginners, the second leg of this challenge is set to take place at the Sarawak Club Golf Resort’s stunning golf course on 15th August.

This unique irons-only tournament, organised by Golf Malaysia Magazine since 2001, has been inducted into the Malaysian Guinness Book of Record in 2002.

The first leg of the Maruman-Golf Malaysia Irons Challenge was successfully hosted at the Swiss-Garden Golf Resort & Spa Damai Laut in Perak on 1st August, which saw a full field of golfers having a fun time playing with just their irons.

The second and final leg of the 2009 edition has being brought exclusively to Kuching for the first time to enable Sarawak golfers to experience its uniqueness.

“This year, we are pleased to bring the tournament out of Peninsular Malaysia and host it in Kuching. The Golf Malaysia Irons Challenge is the original creation of Golf Malaysia Magazine and this year we are pleased to have the support of Maruman Golf as our partner,” said Juliana Cheah, the publisher of Golf Malaysia Magazine.

“We are also proud to say this is perhaps the only all-iron tournament in the region and probably the only all-iron challenge in the world. Golfers who join this tournament will each receive loads of goodies and special Irons Challenge attire under the Perry Gear label,” she added.

The challenge has golfers leaving their drivers and fairway woods at home or in their vehicle, as the only 'legal' clubs in their bags are conventional irons of 1-9 irons, wedges and putter, in addition to one bonus club, as in a hybrid-iron that has 16-degree of loft and above. Players, are also not allowed to use utility-woods or iron-woods.

Joachim Martin, the marketing manager of Transview Golf, said: “Maruman is pleased to be the joint title sponsor of the 2009 Golf Malaysia Irons Challenge. Through this prestigious event, we shall bring together our two premium brands and provide a value service and products to golfers nationwide.”

The Maruman-Golf Malaysia Irons challenge is open to all amateur golfers and the format is under the Stableford [modified] mode of play with four divisions. The A Division comprises players holding handicaps from 0 to 15. In the B Division, players will consist of golfers holding handicaps 16 to 19, while the C Division caters to golfers holding handicaps 20 to 24. The last category would be the Ladies' Division.

Luxurious prizes will be awarded to the top five (5) players in each division. There will also be lucrative prizes in the Novelty events, namely the Hole-in-One, Nearest-to-Pin, Nearest-to-Line, Nearest-to-Bunker and Longest Drive challenges. Among the prizes for those lucky golfers who shot a hole-in-one are a set of Maruman irons set, a Panaboard and a luxury timepiece.

For those who are unable to notch any wins in their respective categories, there are lots of attractive lucky draw prizes, including the new Maruman AD460 driver, to look forward to.

Heineken beer will quench the thirst of participants upon the completion of their round, with generous sponsors Svenson Hair Care, Men’s Skin Centres, Nature Valley Crunchy Granola Bar, SunPlay 130 (the official sun care sponsor), Daisy Springs mineral water and Isomax isotonic drink all adding to the merriment of this special occasion.
