CRISTIE KERR AND MICHELLE WIE CONFIRM THEIR RETURN TO SIME DARBY LPGA MALAYSIA 2011

KUALA LUMPUR (Aug 24, 2011): Sime Darby Berhad and event organisers IMG are delighted to announce the return of international superstars, Cristie Kerr and Michelle Wie, to this year’s Sime Darby LPGA Malaysia 2011.

The two top-flight Americans will compete against several other high ranking female golfers at the prestigious

Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club (KLGCC) from Oct 13-16 2011.

Kerr, a well-known figure on the LPGA Tour since her debut in 1997, is currently ranked second in the Women’s World Golf Rankings (as of Aug 8 2011), the highest among American lady golfers.

With a remarkable 14 LPGA victories already to her name, she hit the top of the Women's World Golf Rankings in June last year after winning two of the first 10 tournaments on the LPGA Tour, including the LPGA Championship. She won by a recordbreaking 12-stroke margin over the second-place finisher Song-Hee Kim.

“I am extremely pleased to confirm that I will once again be playing in Malaysia in October. I had a pretty good tournament last year but will definitely be looking to improve this year. I was particularly moved by the tournament’s association with the Cancer Research Initiatives Foundation (CARIF) charity and its support of breast cancer awareness. This is a cause that is particularly close to my heart and one which I am always keen to support whenever I can,” said Kerr.

Meanwhile Wie, who turned professional in 2005, has two professional titles to her name to date. In 2006, she became the first female medalist in a US Open qualifying tournament at Turtle Bay, Hawaii at the age of 16. She has since moved up the rankings table, amassing close to US$4 million in career prize money.

She said, “I am really looking forward to be back in Malaysia this year. I felt so welcome last year when I arrived for the tournament, and I am honoured to be the honorary member of KLGCC and to stay in one of Sime Darby Property’s homes at Turnberry Villas during the tournament. They are breath-taking homes and made me feel so comfortable. Last year’s tournament was very exciting and I hope I can be at the top of the leader board on the final day. ”

This year’s Sime Darby LPGA Malaysia promises to offer an even greater showcase, with an increase in prize purse, field size and number of playing days on the cards come October. The 2011 tournament will now feature the top 62 LPGA members from the LPGA Tour Official Money List, along with 10 sponsors’ invites. The four-day stroke play event with no cut will ensure that players are in Kuala Lumpur for the tournament duration and the local and regional golf community can catch their favourite golfers in action the entire week.

“With 9 out of 10 of the top women players’ (from the Rolex Money List) participation last year, the Sime Darby LPGA Malaysia 2010 has created a benchmark in women’s golf in the region.

“This year, we are delighted that the tournament continues to attract world ranking players such as Michelle and Cristie. Sime Darby recently confirmed that another American, Paula Creamer, will compete in this this year’s tournament alongside two Malaysian golfers, Kelly Tan and Jean Chua, who will receive two of the sponsors’ invites for the 2011 Championship.

Creamer, who was unable to attend last year’s event due to an injury, is hoping to make her mark in this year’s tournament. Rising star Kelly finished at a commendable 32nd placing, becoming the leading local player in last year’s inaugural Sime Darby LPGA Malaysia, while Jean Chua recently played in the US Open 2011.

“The return of Cristie Kerr and Michelle Wie to the Sime Darby LPGA Malaysia 2011, alongside fellow American Paula Creamer, is fantastic news for this year’s tournament. Sime Darby will also be running a qualifying session where two girls from Malaysia and two from Asia will be able to qualify for this prestigious tournament. The competition takes place on the 6th and 7th of September and will be played over 36 holes of scintillating golf. The tournament is open to all female professional or amateur golfers with a handicap of 2.0 or less. The two Malaysian players and the two Regional players with the lowest score over the two days will get invitations to play in the Sime Darby LPGA Malaysia 2011.

The qualifying tournament attracts players from the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Brunei, Myanmar, Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, Indonesia, Korea, Japan, China, Taiwan and Hong Kong.

SINGH SPEARHEADS ASIAN TOUR CHARGE AT OMEGA EUROPEAN MASTERS

Kuala Lumpur, August 25: Asian Tour honorary member Jeev Milkha Singh of India will bring a big dose of confidence and form into the Omega European Masters next week.

Singh, Asia’s number one in 2006 and 2008, has produced some of his best golf recently with three solid results in his last three tournaments and he will be eyeing another stellar run at the Crans-sur-Sierre Golf Club from September 1 to 4.

In recent years, the Indian star has struggled with injuries but is showing glimpses of his best form which earned him two Asian Tour Order of Merit crowns.

This season, he has notched two top-10s on the European Tour with his best finish being tied sixth at the Nordea Masters last month. Singh has won numerous titles on the Asian, Japan and European Tours and will be determined to end a three-year title drought next week.

“The tied-sixth place was only my second top-10 of the season and my best result in a long, long time but I do feel that I am getting closer and closer to the form that should give me the desired results,” said Singh in his latest blog.

His title ambition will be tested against a strong line-up of stars including new Major winners Rory McIlroy and Darren Clarke of Northern Ireland and world number two Lee Westwood of England at the €2,000,000 (approximately US$2.6 million) event co-sanctioned by the Asian Tour and European Tour.

Japanese ace Tetsuji Hiratsuka, who won three titles on the Asian Tour last year, S.S.P. Chowrasia of India, currently leading the Order of Merit and rising star Baek Seuk-hyun of Korea will also feature in the Omega event.

Thailand will be represented by no fewer than six players including Thongchai Jaidee, Thaworn Wiratchant, Udorn Duangdecha, Pariya Junhasavasdikul, Chinnarat Phadungsil and Chapchai Nirat, who have a combined total of 33 Asian Tour victories.

After a sensational season last year, Hiratsuka will make his debut at the Omega European Masters where he will be hoping to eclipse the elite cast gathered at the stunning Crans-sur-Sierre Golf Club.

He has two top-10s in Japan this year and has yet to miss the halfway cut on the Asian Tour. His experience of playing in the British Open will also be put to good use next week.

Chinnarat, the youngest player to win on the Asian Tour at 17 years and five days in 2005 while he was still an amateur, is one of the most consistent players this season. He has made seven consecutive cuts on the Asian Tour, highlighted by the two top-10s. He will be upbeat of carding a solid result in his third appearance at the Omega European Masters.

The Omega European Masters is the first event in Europe to be co-sanctioned by the Asian Tour and European Tour in 2009.

Nachimuthu Eagles His Way To Title

M. Nachimuthu put together an eagle and seven birdies against two bogeys on the final round to clinch the PGM Classic title at Penang Golf Resort, Bertam, Penang on Thursday.

The final round was quite a thriller because the lead had changed hands from Sasidaran to Anis Helmi and finally to R. Nachmuthu who won it with the last birdie putt on the last hole.

His 7-under 65 on the final day was also the best.

Nachimuthu carded a 7-under 65 on the final round and 16-under 272 to beat Anis Helmi and Shaaban Hussin by one shot.

Anis and Shaaban carded a 5-under 67 and 15-under 273.

Nachimuthu began his brilliant final round with an eagled the the par-5 491-yard 2^nd hole followed by birdies to add to his string of birdies at the 1^st, 8^th and 9^th.

^{He bogeyed} the 3^rd and 4^th bogeyed to card a 3-under 33 in the first nine.

Nachimuthu won the tournament with a birdie at the last and was helped by Anis Helmi who was leading by one at the time had bogeyed the par-3 17^th.

His second nine was a bogey-free game with birdied at the 11^th, 15^th,16^thand the 18^th for a seven-under 65 and 16-under four-day total to beat Anis Helmi and Shaaban Hussin by one shot.

Nachimuthu who began the final round two shots behind overnight leader M.Sasidaran, said:”I said to my caddy that if I birdie the last hole, I am confident I would win this tournament.

“Overall my game is good today I did not do any silly mistakes.” Nachimuthu said his RM18,000 prize money would help finance his participation in future events.

Anis Helmi said:” Although I came joint second I am happy with my game and fifteen under is my best game so far. When I heard the cheers on the 18^th I knew that I had to birdie the last hole for a playoff. I thought my 40-footer putt on the last was good but it just missed by a whisker.”

“Today’s game gave me a lot of confidence. I hope I can be in contention in the future events,” said Anis Helmi who received RM11,000.

Shaaban who was champion of the PGM Trengganu Classic who began one shot behind overnight leader M.Sasidaran, made some good putts to stay in the hunt despite putting one tee-shot into the water but still managed to save par.

He bounced back with an eagle at the 8th, followed by back-back birdies on the 10^th and the 11^th.

GAVIN WINS IN DRAMATIC PLAYOFF

Gavin Green won the Kurnia-Saujana Amateur Championship in a

dramatic play-off with Ryan Peake after the Australian made

up the one-stroke difference between them with a birdie at

the final hole. Ryan posted 71 while Gavin played to par 72.
In the sudden death played at the 580-yard Par 5, 18th hole,

Peake's drive ended just inside the fairway bunker near the

lip while Gavin found the same bunker slope. Peake's second

shot veered right into the trees and among heavy rough about

140 yards from the pin while Gavin's shot made the fairway.

Peake found a window among the heavy foliage but his pitch

shot went hot and overshot the green into OB. He played

another ball but it ended at the back of the green. Gavin

deftly chipped his ball onto the green and easily two-putted

for his second win in the event.

"After I saw Ryan's ball ending into the trees, I knew I had

a good chance. My second shot was in good position on the

fairway and when Ryan's ball went OB, I knew the tournament

was mine," said Gavin. Gavin, who started the final round

with a 1-stroke lead, dropped a shot at the 4th but had 3

birdies up to the 13th hole while Ryan bogeyed the 6th,

giving Gavin a 4-stroke lead. Gavin gave back 2 strokes with

consecutive bogeys at the 14th and 15th and Peake reduced

the deficit to one stroke with a birdie at the 17th. At the

18th, Peake produced the shot of the day with a restricted

3-wood punch shot with his back to a tree, sending the ball

only 40 feet from the green. He chipped to 1 foot for a

birdie to force the play-off.

"I needed to birdie the 18th and my shot was solid despite

the tight situation, but I dented the toe of the club in

the process," said Peake who hails from Perth. "In the

play-off, I miss-hit my bunker shot and sent the ball into

the palm trees which cost me the chance for the title."
Gavin and Peake each had 3-day total of 210. Singaporean

Jerome Ng was placed third at 218 and Filipino Jobim Carlos

fourth at 219. The next best Malaysian was Mohamad Hisyam

Majid at 226 for 8th place.

DRAMATIC FINALE AS BRINGOLF OVERTAKES CHIEH FOR THE TITLE

Chieh Po Lee’s cruise on the first three days of the 109^th Malaysian Amateur Open Golf Championship came to a screeching halt in the final round at the A’Famosa Golf Resort.

Final day nerves frazzled the 16-year old who struggled to chalk up a five-over-par 77 and was relegated to runner-up spot on eight-under-par 280.

A bad double-bogey start at the par-four first hole was added with a miscalculated slip at the par-five 7^th hole when his caddie had to help pull him out from the edge of the nearby pond.

“I tried to make it two-on, but failed and while searching for my ball in what I thought was a dry hazard, I slid into the pond,” rued the teen from Taipei.

As Chieh cracked under final day pressure, Daniel Bringolf made good the two-stroke deficit yesterday with a one-under-par 71 to snatch the title by four strokes with a tournament total of 12-under-par 276.

“I was just playing well all the way and aimed at maintaining my form and today everything fell into place,” said the 20-year old from Sydney Bringolf who took the lead with a birdie at the 10^th. “I just thought if I put a little pressure later, it might crack him (Chieh) and I’ll be able to take the lead.”

India’s Abhijit Chadha claimed third place with a closing 71 that left him on seven-under-par 281 while Singapore’s Lam Zhiqun fired the day’s best score of four-under-par 68 to finish fourth on five-under-par 283.

A stroke behind in fifth place was Thailand’s Rattanon Wannasrichan whose even-par 72 today left him on four-under-par 284 total. Reigning Sabah Amateur Open champion, the Philippines’ Jobim Carlos finished on three-under-par 285.

Meanwhile, Abel Tam was the best Malaysian on five-over-par 293 followed by Kenneth de Silva and Mohamad Azman Basharudin who were tied on 294 total.

Aretha Pan recorded a wire-to-wire victory in the women’s category, closing with a one-over-par 73 to finish with a three-day total of six-under-par 210.

Without any prompting, the 17 year-old gushed, “I got my driving license!” referring to her father’s promise upon winning this event. “But today my putting was quite bad. I didn’t need to do many chipping as I found the greens in regulations.”

Starting badly on the front nine, Aretha sank two bogeys but made amends on the back nine with two birdies and a lone bogey.

Philippines claimed runner-up and third spots through Dottie Ardina who closed with a three-under-par finish for a three-day total of 212, followed by Jayvie Agojo on 213 strokes.

The ladies’ two-day International Team event concluded yesterday, with Hsin-En Tsai and Chi Wang finishing with 280 strokes earning Taiwan top spot.

MOORE WINS IMPIAN CLASSIC

American Jonathan Moore took advantage of Filipino Artemio Murakami's misfortunes to claim a classy three-stroke victory at the PGM-ADT-CCM Impian Classic on Sunday.
The 26-year-old rookie shot a closing five-under-par 67 to bag his first victory on the Asian Development Tour with a winning total of 22-under-par 266 at the Impian Golf and Country Club.

Earlier, Murakami was leading by three shots and at the turn he drove into out of bounds on the 10th hole for a double bogey and never recovered. He was forced to settle for second place after signing for a final round 69 in the RM200,000 event organized by Professional Golf Malaysia (PGM).

Chinese Taipei's Chang Tse-peng finished third, four behind the winner, after a 66 while Ben Leong was Malaysia's best finisher at tied fifth place on 274 alongside co-overnight leader Himmat Rai of India, who faded with a closing 75.

Moore, a former US Walker Cup team member, delivered the knock out blows with three straight birdies from the 13th hole as he celebrated a first title in Asia which was made special as his wife Claire was caddying for him.

"It feels great, it was a lot of fun. My wife is with me and we're having a great time," said Moore, who was third in last week's Clearwater Masters in Malaysia which was won by countryman Barry Henson.

"Artemio played phenomenal golf and I felt kind of bad seeing what happened to him. It was a lot closer than it was. I was trailing by quite a lot as he shot five under on the front nine. He played great. But some putts fell in for me at a crucial time.

"I had a good week last week and it is kind of funny as I've actually tried to play more conservative golf and suddenly, I start shooting low scores. It's a crazy game," added the American, who pocketed RM35,000 (approximately US$11,666).

Murakami was cruising comfortable after he turned in 31 but stumbled with a poor tee shot on 10. "The momentum changed when I hit it out of bounds. From there, I couldn't get my tee shots onto the fairways and I had tough second shots. It was his day," said the Filipino.

"I missed a birdie chance from eight feet on the ninth hole. If that one had gone in, it could have been a bit different. But Jonathan played so good. I'm still happy as I managed to shoot a 69.

"I hope to keep my momentum going until next weekend. Everything has been working this week. I'm happy with my swing and I'm really enjoying playing golf right now."

Rai, rated as one of India's rising stars, was disappointed to falter at the final hurdle after leading for the opening three rounds. "I started off terribly. I was quite shock after the first couple of holes as I didn't do much wrong. I drew a bad lie on the second hole when I lost it right and it ended on the face of the bunker. My attempt to get out hit the wall and I drew a bad lie again," said the 23-year-old Indian.

"It was still good experience for me. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I'm playing well and I'm looking forward to next week and the rest of the year. Obviously I'm disappointed now but I think I have many more opportunities to come."

PGM-ADT-CCM Impian Classic

India's Himmat Rai stayed firmly in the hunt for a first Asian Development Tour victory at the PGM-ADT-CCM Impian Classic on Saturday but will have in-form American rookie Jonathan Moore for company in the final round.

Rai, who has held the lead since the opening day, shot a third round of five-under-par 67 at the Impian Golf and Country Club for a 17-under-par 199 total in the RM200,000 (approximately US$67,000) tournament.

Moore, a former US Walker Cup team member and featuring in his first season in Asia, enjoyed five birdies and an eagle for a 65 which pushed him atop the leaderboard with Rai.

Co-overnight leader Artemio Murakami of the Philippines will start Sunday's final round one shot back after signing for a 68 while American Will Yanagisawa finished the day in fourth place, four behind, after a 69.

Malaysian Ben Leong produced the day's lowest round of 64 to move to sixth place on 206.

Rai, 23, birdied all the par fives to give himself a shot at winning a second professional victory after his lone win on the Indian circuit in 2009. "I enjoyed it, I played well. I hit the ball good and did the same things as the past two days. The flags were accessible but I'm playing to the middle of the greens and made a few putts," said Rai, who totaled six birdies on the card.

"I've been putting well for a while now. It's always been my strong point. It's exciting and I'm looking forward to tomorrow. Winning is always a great thing and it'll be good to get the job done."

The 26-year-old Moore, who was the NCAA champion in America in 2006, birdied the opening three holes, including a chip-in on the second, before finishing strongly with another eagle on the penultimate hole where he rifled a seven iron approach to five feet of the flag.

"It was great, a lot of fun. I got off to a quick start and had a nice chip in which got things going. I didn't expect it at all and then I eagled the 17th again. It was a good day," said Moore, whose wife Claire is caddying for him.

Last week, the American finished tied third at the Clearwater Masters and he'll be looking to improve by a couple of notches and emulate countryman Barry Henson's victory.

"I can't control what the guys are doing. It'll be fun. You've got to keep making birdies as the guys are playing good. It'll be a good shootout," said Moore, who graduated from Oklahoma State University.

Murakami is using the Impian Classic as a warm-up for his defence of the Asian Tour's ICTSI Philippine Open next week and stayed closely behind the leaders. He was disappointed with his back nine after his putter started missing the mark.

"I started strongly but on the back nine, my putter cooled off. I had a few bad breaks and missed four foot birdie chances on the 14th and 18th holes. I just have to play well tomorrow," said the Filipino.

Professional Golf of Malaysia (PGM) Update

Golf in Malaysia will continue to be on the upswing with the launch of the PGM – ADT Impian Classic on the Asian Development Tour next month.

The RM200,000 (approximately US$66,666) tournament will become the latest Malaysian tournament to join the fledgling Asian Development Tour. It will be staged at the Impian Golf and Country Club in Kajang, a 30-minute drive from the capital city of Kuala Lumpur, from May 5 to 8. The inclusion of the PGM – ADT Impian Classic will create a Malaysian swing for the region’s rising stars as it will be held the week after the inaugural Clearwater Masters in Batu Gajah, Perak.

YABhg Tun Ahmad Sarji Bin Abdul Hamid, the Chairman, Professional Golf of Malaysia, the event promoter, was delighted to form its first tie-up with the Asian Development Tour. The PGM - ADT Impian Classic is the 7th leg of golf tour in Malaysia known as “PGM Tour” which was established to provide regular competitions to promote the development of professional golf sports in Malaysia.
“We are looking forward to a long-term partnership with the Asian Development Tour. It is our vision and goal to create new playing opportunities for Malaysia’s upcoming players to compete on a higher platform and gain experience to eventually become world-class players,” said Tun Ahmad Sarji.

The Asian Development Tour was established last year by the Asian Tour as a platform to unearth new stars of the game. The top three players on the Order of Merit would subsequently be rewarded with Asian Tour cards. Last season, S. Siva Chandhran of Malaysia, Hsu Chia-jen of Chinese Taipei and another Malaysian prospect Akhmal Tarmizee finished in the top three of the rankings to earn playing rights on the Asian Tour, the region’s elite circuit.
PGM Chairman said: “Siva and Akhmal are great examples of our players who have excelled on the Asian Development Tour. We hope to have more Malaysians joining them on the Asian Tour in the near future.”

Over the 2 days about 50 birdies were recorded in the Golf Malaysia Champion of Champions Championship often known as ‘Malaysia’s Masters of Amateur Golf’.

Now in its 24th year, the Golf Malaysia’s Champion of Champions Championship is only open to the current Men’s, Ladies and Senior’s champions of all golf clubs throughout Malaysia and Singapore and this year it included participation from club champions in Brunei.

Held at the breathtaking Berjaya Hills Golf & Country Club, March 25-26, the weather was soperfect – in sunny and cool weather condition, Sibu golf club’s Lee Ka Tung, Saujana golf club’s June Yap and Kelab Golf Perhidmatan Awam’s Mahat Bahari, all bested their opponents to emerged the Men’s, the Ladies and the Senior champion divisions, respectively.

Both Ka Tung and June Yap are now three time Golf Malaysia Champion of Champions title holders.
At the prize giving ceremony the three new champions were presented their green jackets ‘Augusta Style’ from last year’s winners.
In the Golf Malaysia Champion of Champions Invitational category, Salehan Othman (8), from Royal Seri Menanti Golf Club shot a two day total nett score of 151 to be the champion. Haji Sazali Md Hasni (10) from Sri Morib Golf Club has 152 nett for second place and Dato’ Lian Chin Boon (18) from Pulai Springs Golf Resort came third at 155 nett.

Mazda2 - No one won the Mazda2 car for a hole-in-one at hole No. 11.

Callaway Longest Drive winner - Mohd Shanizam Mohd Mohagi (Kinta Golf Club) boomed a distance of 320 metres and Irene Lam Kui Moi (Kelab Rekreasi Tentera Udara) smacked a distance of 240 metres.

The prestigious Champions tournament will see all champions representing their respective clubs heading into the event as firm favourites to take out the title at the 5,918 metres layout of Berjaya Hills Golf & Country Club in Bukit Tinggi. Kota Permai and Sarawak GC are Tops
The latest Golf Malaysia Course Poll that determined the best golf courses in Peninsular Malaysia and East Malaysia produced some pleasant surprises, thanks to 5,723 votes that you, our loyal readers, have taken the time to cast.
In this 2008-2010 survey Golf Malaysia readers have voted by way of our website, at numerous Golf Malaysia competitions, via e-mail, on Facebook and also at the annual GolfFest events.
The 2008-2010 poll was unique, as the voting extended over a three-year period rather than the traditional two-year timeframe of the pervious polls.
In late 2008, Golf Malaysia felt the world’s poor economy was having a negative bearing on the country’s golf courses, especially when it came to maintenance. When the economy started to show signs of recovery in 2009, the decision was made to extend the voting into 2010 with the plan to determine the results in December of 2010 and release the list of winners in early 2011.
When golfers vote they were asked to state their preferences based on the course’s routing, playability, conditions, cleanliness, maintenance, overall landscapes, facilities, services, and the memorable qualities of their rounds.
In our last poll, which gave us winners that reigned from 2008 to 2010, the winner for Peninsular Malaysia was Kota Permai Golf & Country Club and Nexus Golf Resort Karambunai captured the East Malaysia crown.

Since clubs capable of creating overall customer satisfaction year-in-and-year-out tend to garner the votes, Kota Permai G&CC was able to retain the top spot as the best course in Peninsular Malaysia by receiving 1,288 votes. In fact Kota Permai’s win makes it three-in-a-row for the 18-hole facility.
If Kota Permai wishes to join Saujana Golf & Country Club’s Palm course in our Golf Malaysia’s Hall of Fame for outstanding golf courses it will need to win the next two polls to meet the Fame’s criteria of five-in-a-row. And, if this year is any indication Kota Permai’s task is far from a lock.
With 1,117 votes, Kuala Lumpur Golf & Country Club (KLGCC) displaced Clearwater Sanctuary Golf Resort (1,003 votes) as Peninsular Malaysia’s second best course and The Mines Resort Golf Club (1,087) climbed to third to push Clearwater done to fourth.
In the previous poll KLGCC sat at No. 9, but since that poll their West and East courses were completely revamped at a cost of several million Ringgit and the club hosted the 2010 Malaysian Open on the West Course and the inaugural Sime Darby LPGA Malaysia on the East Course. Over the next two years, with their continued hosting of the two professional events and more golfers getting to play their outstanding new layouts KLGCC will give Kota Permai a strong challenge.
The same can also be said of The Mines Resort. While its 18 holes did not undergone major renovation, the condition of the course was brought to its finest in 2010 as the club prepared to host the first US PGA Tour event to come to Malaysia, the CIMB Asia Pacific Classic Malaysia. The expose this first-class tournament provided The Mines had it moving from No. 7 to No. 3 in the voting and like KLGCC it will be challenging Kota Permai for the top spot over the next two years.

The most startling news, however, from the latest poll is that, there are NINE new ‘faces’ in the Peninsular Malaysia Top 20. Leading the way for the new comers was Saujana Golf & Country Club’s Bunga Raya course in the fifth position followed by: Starhill Golf Club No. 12, Horizon Hills Golf Club No. 13, Ayer Keroh Country Club No. 15, Berjaya Hills Golf & Country Club No. 16, Pulai Springs Golf Resort No. 17, Datai Bay Golf Club No. 18, The Legends Golf & Country Resort No. 19, and Bukit Jawi Golf Resort No. 20.
Clubs voted out of top 20 included Staffield Country Resort in Mantin, Negeri Sembilan (3rd previously), Palm Garden Golf Club in Putrajaya (4th), Cinta Sayang Golf & Country Club in Sungai Petani, Kedah (5th), Kajang Hill Golf Club (6th), Sungai Long Golf & Country Club in Kajang (8th), Bukit Jambul Country Club in Pulau Pinang (11th), Kelab Golf Negara Subang in Petaling Jaya (12th), Kelab Golf Rahman Putra in Sungai Buloh (19th) and Glenmarie in Shah Alam (20th).
The biggest upward moves were made by Tropicana Golf & Country Club which jumped from No. 18 to No. 6 and Tanjong Puteri GRfrom 16th to 9th.

The Top 10 East Malaysia Courses from the states of Sabah and Sarawak, had Sarawak Golf Club dethroning Nexus Golf Resort Karambunai and their jump from No. 7 to No. 1 represented the strongest move among the top 10. The second biggest upward move was Sabah Golf & Country Club going from 10th to 5th.

Interestingly, no new courses appeared in the East Malaysia rankings.
While Nexus lost its pole position to Sarawak Golf Club, it did retain the title of Best Golf Resort in Malaysia with Melaka’s A’Famosa second and Sutera Harbour in third.
And when it comes to being ‘Memorable’ Sabah’s Tawau Hot Spring Golf Club impressed those who played enough to outrank Clearwater Sanctuary who claimed the second spot.
For those who have not played Tawau’s Hot Spring, be informed that the tough 18-hole layout gets the ‘Memorable’ honour because of its natural jungle settings, cool highlands weather, the frequent appearance of majestic hornbillls and more out-of-bounds than any other course in Malaysia.
Clearwater Sanctuary Resort again, top in the most scenic category, followed by Awana Genting GC, Bukit Unggul GC, Tawau Hot Spring and Berjaya Hills GC.
As for difficulty Klang Valley golfers have to look no future than Kelab Rahman Putra as it is the most difficult course to handle, followed by Orna GC in Melaka, Tanjung Puteri GR, Berjaya Hills GC and Horizon HillsGC.
In the Most Difficult Hole category readers put Hole 9 on the Lake Nine at Tiara Melaka GC, with another 9th hole, that of The Legends GC’s Nicklaus course at No. 2, with Hole 3 Hill course at Rahman Putra GC, Hole 15 Bukit Jawi GR and No. 18 at Kinrara GC in that order.
Darul Ehsan Golf Club was voted as it was in the previous poll, the Best 9-hole Course, followed by Bukit Utama, Royal Kampung Kuantan GC, Royal Kedah GC and Valencia GC in Sungai Buluoh.

The Golf Malaysia Course Poll 2011-2012 poll will commence with voting in December 2011 with the results announced in the 2013 February issue of Golf Malaysia magazine.

BANGLADESH MASTERS

SIDDIKUR ROMPS TO 12-STROKE VICTORY

Bangladeshi Siddikur posted a final round score of three-under-par 69 for a 19-under-par 269 total to win the Bangladesh Masters title at the US$75,000 Asian Development Tour event.
Md. Milon Ahmed of Bangladesh secured second position with a 72 for a 281 total, 12 strokes behind Siddikur while amateur golfer Md. Jakiruzzaman (68), also of Bangladesh and flamboyant Japanese prospect Yosuke Tsukada (74) shared third place on a 284 total at the Kurmitola Golf Club.
"I want to dedicate my victory to Bangladesh. This is the first time the Asian Development Tour is organized here and it was great exposure to the professional golfers in Bangladesh,” said Siddikur, who won US$13,125.
Siddikur got off to a strong start, sinking three consecutive birdies from the first hole before returning with three further birdies against as many bogeys.
Since his victory at the Brunei Open last season, Siddikur has continued to fly the Bangladeshi flag on the international stage and he is determined to continue his mission in the new Asian Tour season.
Milon, who started his golfing journey with Siddikur as a ball boy at the Kurmitola Golf Club, rued a cold putter as he closed with three birdies against three bogeys. He was ecstatic with his experience of playing in his first Asian Development Tour event and hopes to one day follow in the footsteps of his close friend Siddikur.
A tired Tsukada, who struggled with fatigue, admitted he was playing for second place but was disappointed to bogey the last hole and eventually finish in tied third.
The top three players on the Order of Merit at the end of the season will earn their Asian Tour cards for 2012.

Maybank has confirmed its commitment for another five years as the title sponsor of the Malaysian Open, increasing the tournament's prize purse to US$2.5 million at the same time.

Young sensations Louis Oosthuizen and Charl Schwartzel from South Africa and Rory McIlroy from Ireland, aare expected to lead the 2011 field of players in the 156 player this April 14th to 17th at Kuala Lumpur Golf & Country Club (West Course).

On the star players, Tan Sri Dato' Megat Zaharuddin Megat Mohd Nor Chairman of Maybank said: “We are thrilled to welcome Oosthuizen, Schwartzel and McIlroy to the 50th edition of the Maybank Malaysian Open. Past Malaysian Open has seen the likes of Vijay Singh, Padraig Harrington, Retief Goosen, Michael Campbell, Lee Westwood and Nick Faldo making waves on its courses over the years. In 2010, this prestigious event was won by 19-year old Korean sensation Noh Seung-Yul who then went on to become Asian Tour's number one player.

In addition to the series of announcements, Maybank also revealed the appointment of local heroes Danny Chia and Mohd Shaaban Hussin as the Ambassadors of the Maybank Malaysian Open 2011. Golf in Vietnam

Thu Duc Garden Homes Invitational attracted 122 players from around Vietnam.

And so, a course record fell as Vietnam’s top amateur tournament was held from January 7-9 at Danang Golf Club.

The format was conducted in 36 holes of stroke play and, as one might expect, three of the five Asian Tour representatives claimed top honors. Australian Unho Park’s 139 led the field, thanks to Sunday’s closing 69, a new course record from the championship Shark Tees at 8-month-old, Greg Norman-designed Danang GC. Lam Chih Bing of Singapore finished two strokes back while Vietnam’s own Tran Le Duy Nhat placed third at 146.

The individual competitions were broken out into five separate divisions:

• Amateur Gross (no handicap)

• Amateur Net (maximum handicap: 13)

• Vietnam National Team Open (no handicap)

• Professional (local and regional tours)

• VIP (with handicap)

Earning Amateur Gross honors was Vietnam Golf & Country Club’s Nguyen Ngoc Khoi, whose 74 on Saturday and 73 Sunday which gave him a 7 shot victory over this strong field. The Amateur Net champion was Le Ngoc Tu of Montgomerie Links, who plays off 12 and posted 135 over the two days.

Lau A Tay, playing out of Dong Nai GC, earned top spot among Vietnam National Team Open entrants, posting 82-78, while Vo Viet Thanh of Vietnam Golf & Country Club earned the VIP title with a net score of 140.

“The tournament was a qualified success in terms of the quality and depth of the field, the atmosphere and the venue. Even the weather cooperated!” said FOREGolf Asia Managing Director Jeff Puchalski. “It absolutely poured rain on Friday morning, the day we were supposed to have played practice rounds. That makes one nervous, of course, but Saturday and Sunday were both perfect for golf.

Puchalski reserved special praise for the Dunes Course at Danang Golf Club, General Manager Howie Roberts, and his staff. This Norman design was recently cited by GOLF Magazine as one of the top 15 new courses to open worldwide in 2010, and none of the competitors in January are about to disagree.

“Everyone loved the course and the Asian Tour players frankly raved,” Puchalski said. “The playing conditions could not have been better and the staff at Danang GC was superb. Their personalized service made the event really special.”

“Unho Park ultimately took the top prize, on Sunday, but the atmosphere late Sunday morning — when we held a sudden-death putt-off to gain the final —was electric. There were 122 people, the entire field, gathered around the putting green at Danang, living and dying with every stroke,” Puchalski said.

The two days of competition offered dozens of compelling storylines all their own, but special attention was paid to the hole-in-one competitions on account of what was at stake. A finer collection of prizes would be hard to find anywhere in Asia, unfortunately nobody won them:

• Host Danang Golf Club put up a two-year membership

• Course supplier Jebsen & Jessen offered Club Car golf cart, or $5000 USD in cash

Adam Scott had been beaten by a girl before, just not by a 12-year-old. Playing the 17th hole of the WGC-HSBC Champions Pro-Am, Scott found the bunker and made bogey. Little Lucy Shi Yuting, a 13-time winner in three years on the HSBC National Junior Championship, made par.
The significance is twofold: the other girl to beat Scott was a few years ago and someone called Wie - Michelle Wie - and you can make a note that November 3rd 2010 was the day when the elite of men's golf truly came to realise that China is coming faster than they realized.
"These are the Olympic champions and world champions of the future. They're fantastic! Fantastic!" raved Europe's Ryder Cup-winning captain Colin Montgomerie after conducting a clinic with some of the younger children from China Junior Golf Program.
"They're proper golfers. They're not just kids that can hit a golf ball on the range. These are complete golfers at nine years old: driver, putting, and short game!" Monty continued.
"I think in the next 10 years you'll see a tremendous growth into competitive golf; I'm talking about into the world's top 100. That's inevitable. It's going to happen. We have to accept that. The competition is coming from this part of the world: Korea, China especially. Golf is booming!"

As Monty was saying those words, Mickelson was coming off the course having also encountered Lucy Shi at the 17th, three days after she beat her rivals by 12 shots over three rounds at the HSBC National Junior Championship final.
"She hit a 6-iron to about 15 feet from the hole, lipped out the putt and made par. She was an incredible player!" said Lefty.
"You could tell right away that she's got a lot of potential to be a great golfer. She has a wonderful swing, a great short game, great putting stroke. And at only 12, it's amazing how talented she is at such a young age. I hope that she continues to develop and continues to play well and improve and become a force on the LPGA."

Back on the range, Monty was echoing the words of PGA Tour player Jason Dufner who, a year earlier, having done the same clinic exclaimed the Chinese kids he saw were far superior to their equivalent age group in the States.
"Oh of course they are! Way ahead! And of course the work ethic here is different. These kids are prepared to put in the hours it takes nowadays to become very, very good. You can see how they love it. They're all involved. It's fantastic and the work ethic here is different to ours," Monty said, adding that the focus of the kids he saw put him to shame.
"I was a lazy player myself; two or three hours and I was getting a little bit bored. These kids? Six, seven hours a day and just golf! Then they're studying as well. This is where the future is. Now golf has become an Olympic sport, in this country it can only add to the opportunities given to them and the incentives given to them. They're well ahead of our youngsters.
If it's a numbers game China wins every time hands down. I've had a successful career I suppose and I started at six and I couldn't even get the ball airborne when I was ten, never mind hit the ball like this. These are *golfers!"
Montgomerie's comments came as the junior championship was celebrating the one thousandth child to compete in the elite tier of tournaments that have been running since 2007.
"A thousand children may not sound like a lot over the four years that we have been investing in the China Golf Association's programme, but that's the top of the pyramid," said Giles Morgan, HSBC Group Head of Sponsorship.
"Below the top of that pyramid, we have had 8,000 children who have come through our summer and winter camps, learning the great game of golf, and below that, at the foundation of the pyramid, we have had 200,000 children touching golf for the first time in their schools' PE lessons through the HSBC Education Programme," Morgan added.

JIMIN KANG STORMS HOME TO WIN INAUGURAL SIME DARBY LPGA MALAYSIA

South Korean posts final round 65, lowest round of the day to win her second LPGA title

KUALA LUMPUR, 24 October 2010 – Jimin Kang from South Korea claimed a thrilling one-stroke victory in the inaugural Sime Darby LPGA Malaysia after a dominant final stretch of three birdies in the last four holes at the Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club.

A massive Malaysian crowd witnessed Kang calmly roll in a 12-foot downhill putt on the final hole to shoot 6-under-par 65 to finish just one shot ahead of LPGA Hall of Famer Juli Inkster, who carded a bogey on the final hole to drop out of a tie for the lead.

Kang’s blistering final round left her with a nine-under 204 total and her second LPGA victory, following a Rolex First-Time win at the 2005 LPGA Corning Classic. The 30-year-old’s first place finish meant she took home prize money of US$270,000, vaulting her to 20^th on the 2010 LPGA Official Money List.

“Speechless,” Kang said when asked how she felt. “And that's not that easy to do for me. I played solid. I hit a lot of putts. As you guys can tell, my score was good enough to win a tournament, and you know, it's been a while. So I'm trying to soak this in. I can't believe I won.”

Inkster’s second-place finish was her best of the season thanks to her own brilliant stretch of birdies 13, 15, 16 and 17, the final of which pushed her into the outright lead. However, she pushed her second shot into the right greenside bunker at the 18^th, nearly holing out from the sand before having to settle for a two-putt bogey.

Combined with an 18^th hole birdie from Kang, playing a group behind Inkster, it was enough for victory, or at least a shot at a play-off, to slip away.

“When I miss it, I miss it right,” Inkster said of her final approach. “It was a three-quarter shot and I left it out there. I played well all day.”

First-round leader Mike Miyazato of Japan and Maria Hjorth of Sweden shared third at six-under 207, with Meena Lee alone in fifth another shot back.

Meanwhile, American Cristie Kerr could take over the top position in the Rolex Rankings as a result of her superb final round. The current world No.2 (as at 18 October 2010) began the final round tied for 29^th and, teeing off on the 10^th hole, registered four birdies in her first six holes of the day. Although she added a bogey at 18 (her ninth hole) birdies at three and five saw her finish at five-under-par 66 and in eighth position.

“It would feel great to take over No. 1 this week,” said Kerr. “It’s been so close the last four tournaments. It came down to one putt in Alabama and last week I had a great finish, but just wasn’t close enough. I’ve been thinking about this race all year. It’s coming down to a putt here or there and it cannot get any closer.”

Jiyai Shin, who finished tied for sixth with Christina Kim, is projected to take the No. 2 spot in the Rolex Rankings, while Ai Miyazato, who could only finish tied for 28^th, could fall to No. 3.

Doing the home country proud, amateur Kelly Tan tied for 32^nd at 3-over-par 216 to come out as the best Malaysian performer of the tournament. When asked about her week, the 16-year-old amateur said, “The first day I was really nervous. You know, my heartbeat was really fast, but today I think I handled it pretty well.”

“Of course, it's a little bit of advantage for us to play on our home course. And the weather, we are used to it but I’m really happy with the way I played all week and I am thrilled with my finish,” she added.

Overnight leaders Hjorth and Jee Young Lee from South Korea each struggled on Sunday. Hjorth shot even-par 71, including a bogey at 18 to put her in joint-third position while Lee carded a 75 to drop into a tie for ninth.

The Sime Darby LPGA Malaysia, which took place from 22-24 October, featured a world-class field including the top nine players on the Rolex Rankings who vied for the prize purse of US$1.8 million. The three-day stroke play event with no cut meant that the tournament players were in Kuala Lumpur for the tournament duration and the local and regional golf community were able to catch their favourite golfers in action till the end of the tournament.

KUALA LUMPUR, 23 October 2010 – Sweden’s Maria Hjorth moved into pole position alongside joint overnight leader Lee Jee Young from South Korea after the second round of the inaugural Sime Darby LPGA Malaysia at Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club. The players are tied at an aggregate of six-under par 136 overall, a one-stroke lead over the field moving into tomorrow’s final round.

It was a mixed day for Hjorth, a three-time winner on the LPGA Tour. She had four bogeys, but came up with five birdies and a crucial eagle on the sixth hole to end with a 68, matching yesterday’s first round.

Said Hjorth: “I had a lot of birdies and a great eagle on No. 6, so that obviously helped. Then I had three bogeys in a row (holes 11-13), which was obviously not very good, but overall I'm very happy with the round.

“I actually thought someone would shoot away a little bit in the scoring, but I'm happy that they didn't. I'm hitting the ball well and obviously making some really good putts, so I'm looking forward to tomorrow,” she added

Lee, who shot a 66 yesterday to share the first-round lead with Mika Miyazato, finished with a one-under 70 today. “I played well today. My shot was really good, but I missed a lot of putts, so I just made one‑under. Tomorrow hopefully it'll work (better),” said Lee, who turned professional in 2004 and has one LPGA Tour victory to her name.

Sitting in third place is Rolex Rankings World No.8 and rising star on the Tour, Kim Song-Hee from South Korea, who is at five-under 137 overall after rounds of 69-68.

The 22-year-old said: “I played pretty solid today. I had some great up-and-downs on two, three and four on the front nine. I had a bogey on number seven, but I came back on eight and nine with birdies. I had a lot of confidence in my shot and added two more birdies.”

When asked what her game plan was for tomorrow, Kim added: “I’m just going to play my own game and have more confidence in my shot and trust my caddie.”

Similar to yesterday, play was suspended in the early afternoon at 2.31 pm due to the threat of lightning and showers and resumed at 4.59pm.

Natalie Gulbis, who carded a 68 today and sits in a tie for fourth with Japan’s Mika Miyazato and LPGA Hall of Famer Juli Inkster, was one of the players to have finished her round before the suspension of play.

Gulbis, who was bogey-free until the 18th, feels the course suits her game. “I love this golf course. This is a golf course that suits my eye real well. I'm an aggressive putter, so these greens suit my game well and, depending on what the leaderboard looks like at the end of the day, it will be fun to go out there and play aggressive and see what happens.”

Also finishing with a 68 today, Jean Chua was the best performer amongst the local players. Going into tomorrow’s final round at two-under par, Chua managed three birdies and an eagle today and is now tied for 11th with five other players.

Said the 23-year-old from Cheras: “My round today was pretty solid. I was a little shaky with the putts on the front nine, but on the back nine they started going in. So tomorrow I'm just going to plan on improving my score and just take it easy. I'm excited that my game is coming together at the right time and at the best tournament for me. “

Compatriot Kelly Tan, who shot an even par round yesterday, currently sits in joint 34th place after scoring a 73 today. Amongst the other big names, Cristie Kerr (29th), Ai Miyazato (43th) and Yani Tseng (48th) were further down the leaderboard.

The Sime Darby LPGA Malaysia, featuring a world-class field including the top nine players on the Rolex Rankings who are vying for the prize purse of US$1.8 million, will resume with the final round tomorrow, with starting tee-off times just after 8.30am.

The three-day stroke play event with no cut will ensure that players are in Kuala Lumpur for the tournament duration and the local and regional golf community can catch their favourite golfers in action till the end of the tournament.

17-years old, Korean teen sensation Noh, who was the Malaysian Open winner this year, also managed to qualify for the British Open at St Andrews and making his Major debut by playing all four rounds at the US Open in June where he finished tied 40th and then finished equal 28th at the PGA Championship. Europe’s winning Ryder Cup captain Colin Montgomerie has warned his star player Lee Westwood to expect a backlash from Tiger Woods when he takes away his position as the world’s number one golfer.

The Englishman, who was the bedrock of Europe’s victory at Celtic Manor is projected to take over the top spot in the Official World Rankings when the world’s leading players arrive in Shanghai for the WGC-HSBC Champions in the first week of November.

With Westwood resting his injured calf and Woods not scheduled to play before China either, the 37-year-old from Worksop will overtake the American superstar by virtue of losing fewer points from the back end of the two-year period that the standings are calculated from.

However Montgomerie says that Westwood has got to expect an immediate response when Woods gets to Shanghai.

“He won’t like being number two at anything and he’ll come out fighting, which is great for the tournament, fantastic for the event,” said the 47-year-old Scotsman, talking at a HSBC Charity Golf Day in Hong Kong to raise money for the children’s charity UNICEF.

“Knowing Tiger as I do he’ll probably go out and win the HSBC World Golf event, you’ve got to think that. He came out and played superbly in the (Ryder Cup) singles match. He was two down after two (holes) against Francesco Molinari and then was nine-under for the next 11 holes. It was incredible golf! When he’s spurred on like that there’s nobody better.”

Westwood will first have to complete his recovery from an unusual injury high in his calf. He took the rest of August and September off trying to shake off the injury, which causes swelling in his ankle and lower calf as fluid from the injured muscle drains down his leg. Having returned for the Ryder Cup, his goal is to return in time for the WGC-HSBC Champions from November 4th-7th, a target made more likely by the fact that specialists have told him the injury is not one that can escalate.

“Hopefully, he’s back playing again. It’ll be fantastic to have the world’s top three players, and Martin Kaymer will be there – he’s fourth – it’s fantastic! Fantastic for golf!” said Monty, before pausing to consider how he’d respond should Westwood ask him for advice on how to handle being the world’s number one.

“The only thing that Lee Westwood can do is come over to Shanghai and win!
Lee’s playing as well as anyone in the world of golf right now, and as number one you’ve got to prove it. I was number two to Greg Norman for a number of weeks back in 1996-97 and it’s a big deal when you’re up there. The expectation is that you are the best player in the world and you’re expected to go and prove it.

“Sometimes it’s not easy to do and Lee’s never been there before. I’m sure Lee’s nature and Lee’s personality will come through and he’ll be as anxious to win in Shanghai as Tiger… and as Phil, because if Phil wins in Shanghai he could probably go to number one. It’s very close and if Martin Kaymer has won a couple more events before then as well, he could be number one. It’s all go and it’s fantastic for the event,” said Monty, whose own personal goal, after dedicating the last two years to the Ryder Cup, is to get back into the winner’s circle in his own right and with it become the oldest ever winner on the European PGA Tour

Iskandar Johor Open Gearing Up!

Based on the list of eligible players after the cutoff date late last week, at least 22 local professionals are qualified to be in the illustrious field of the US$1.25 million
(approximately RM4 million) Iskandar Johor Open 2010 at the 6,271-metre,
par-72 Horizon Hills Golf & Country Club from October 14 to 17, 2010.
Shouldering the nation’s challenge at one of the biggest Asian Tour events
will be the undisputed Malaysia’s Number One, Danny Chia, who qualified for
the field having finished 29th on the Asian Tour Order of Merit (OOM) last
year. For the record, top 65 players from the Asian Tour OOM 2009
automatically qualified for the championship.
Danny, 38, made history by becoming the first Malaysian male professional to
make the cut at a major championship when he completed the British Open at
the Old Course of St. Andrews, Scotland in July on two-over-par 290, which
put him ahead of the likes of Ryder Cup star Ian Poulter of England,
European captain Colin Montgomerie of Scotland and former Masters champion
Zach Johnson.
Buoyed by that performance, where he figuratively had one monkey lifted off
his back, Danny will be looking at a better showing in the fourth edition of
the Iskandar Johor Open.
Besides Danny, two other local players qualified based on their rankings on
the Asian Tour OOM 2009. Iain Steel, whose tied fourth finish in 2008 is the
record best for Malaysians at the Iskandar Johor Open, was ranked 53rd on
the OOM and Shaaban Hussin who ended last season ranked 65th.
Other notable Malaysians in the field are 2008 Worldwide Selangor Masters
champion, Ben Leong, 2007 Pakistan Open champion Airil Rizman Zahari,
current Asian Development Tour and Professional Golfers Association of
Malaysia’s Order of Merits leader, S. Sivachandran and M. Sasidaran.
Ten slots are provided to the top ten local players on the PGAM Order of
Merit who are otherwise not exempted. In addition, the top five players from
the recent Malaysian Qualifier also made it to the field.
Local players can still try to qualify for the Iskandar Johor Open via the
International Qualifier, which will take place on October 4 at Horizon Hills.
There are three slots on offer for the qualifying round, which is open
to regional, international as well as local professionals holding a valid Professional
Card from recognised Golf Clubs and Professional Golf Associations.
The top three players who return with the lowest gross score will win the
chance to play in the Iskandar Johor Open under the Qualifier Winners

The inaugural Sime Darby LPGA Malaysia will offer two female golfers from Malaysia the chance to take on the world’s best through the national qualifier which will be played this week on 21-22 September 2010 at the Kuala Lumpur Golf & Country Club (KLGCC)
Contested over 36 holes across two days, the national qualifier will feature
a select field of nine promising Malaysian female golfers who will fight for
a place in the prestigious tournament, which will offer a purse of US$1.8
million at KLGCC from October 22-24, and Golf Malaysia Magazine is proud to be the Official Media Partner of this event.
The event already boasts superstars Michelle Wie, Cristie Kerr and Natalie
Gulbis as confirmed participants. It was also confirmed last week that Kerr,
the current World No.2 on the Rolex Women’s World Golf Rankings, will be
joined by the rest of the world’s top five players – World No.1 Ai Miyazato
from Japan, along with Shin Jiyai from Korea, Yani Tseng from Chinese Taipei

Among the field competing in the national qualifier are Aretha Pang and Isza

3 Blind Golfers Challenged the Pros

Three blind golfers representing the International Blind Golf Association (IBGA) proved that people with disabilities can still lead a sporty lifestyle after taking part in a blind golf challenge that was organized ahead of the inaugural Handa Singapore Classic.

The challenge was held at the Orchid Country Club, host venue of the US$400,000 full field Asian Tour event and played over holes one, eight and nine at the Aranda course. England's Neil Baxter, Malaysia's Yam Ting Woo and Australia's David Blyth were paired with Asian Tour's Unho Park of Australia as well as Singapore's Justin Han and Mitchel Slorach respectively who were all blindfolded to create a sense of realism. "It was fun playing with these Asian Tour professionals as for once, it was a level playing field," said Yam of the friendly challenge that was played in the Texas Scramble format.

"The major obstacle for me when playing blind golf is hitting the ball. I can only visualize where the ball is, as I can't see it. It'll take quite a while for me to perfect the game but I'm enjoying it," added the 57-year-old Malaysian who lost his sight two years ago.

For Pro Han, it was a very difficult experience playing blindfolded. “I totally respect these guys and I hope we can further raise awareness of blind golf through activities like this," he said

Last year, Lam King Foo (7) muscled his way to the top of the leaderboard when he scored 40 Stableford (Modified) points to win the A Division honour at Damai Laut Golf Course. While Thulasidass (16), Dato’ Shamsuar Mahmood (22) and Roselind Nelly (12) were the B, C and Ladies winners.

’S CHIA MAKES BRITISH OPEN HISTORY

St Andrews, July 17: Danny Chia was over the moon after becoming the first Malaysian in British Open history to make the halfway cut on Saturday morning.

The 37-year-old Asian Tour regular endured a sleepless night after thinking he had missed the halfway cut by one stroke at St Andrews following a five-over-par 77 in high winds for a two-day total of two-over-par 146 on Friday.

But with 30 players returning to the Old Course early Saturday to complete the second round in testing conditions, the cut mark eventually settled at 146 which ensured Chia’s place in Open folklore and the weekend rounds.

“It is great to make history for Malaysian golf. It feels really good. I found it hard to sleep last night. I kept looking at the scores on the internet although play was already suspended. I just couldn’t help it and kept looking at the scores to see where I was,” said Chia.

“I woke up at six and checked on the scores again and noticed players were dropping shots. I think I have surpassed myself. As I said yesterday, it was the most satisfying Open campaign for me. I played really well for two days.

“You always dream about playing the weekend rounds in a Major, what more the British Open. It’s a dream come true for me,” added the Malaysian, who was making his third Open appearance.

Apart from being overjoyed, Chia was relieved he will see weekend action in the year’s third Major. When he finished his round yesterday, he was two over the cut line at the time.

“For the first time, I knew I didn’t blow it. I shot five over but I felt that I didn’t leave any shots out there yesterday. After signing my card, I felt I would miss the cut by one which would have been hard to take. I’m so relieved now,” he said.

He hopes his slice of Major history at the world’s oldest Major at the Home of Golf would inspire young Malaysians to emulate and better his feat. Chia added he would fight to move up the leaderboard for a high finish.

“I really hope this will inspire the younger kids. All these while, I’ve always tried so hard to prove myself as part of the reason is I want the younger generation to come out and be better than me. I want them to represent the country in a big event like this,” said Chia, the first Malaysian to win on the Asian Tour with victory in the 2002 Taiwan Open.

“Now, I’ll fight for a better position. The ultimate dream would be to make the top-15 so that I qualify for next year’s Open.”

Chia was happy to silence his critics after receiving text messages from back home with negative connotations. “Last night, I received a few messages saying that I screwed up again. But they are not here and they didn’t watch me play. They don’t know how tough it was yesterday,” said Chia, noting that only 26 players out of 156 broke par for the second round.

“A lot of times, I was in trouble but I hit a lot of great shots to salvage the hole. It doesn’t matter what they say as I feel really good and I know I did good. It was nice to prove them wrong.”

The Malaysian also credited his local caddie Simon Blackmore for providing the guiding hand. “He knows the course in and out and has been a help. I also learned a lot from 2005 when I played here for the first time. Royal Birkdale (in 2008) wasn’t anything like this. This is a true links course where you have to play low shots and run your shots up to the greens. I practiced those shots before coming over and I’m glad I’ve been able to play well.”

Top players in each of the four categories — Men’s A Division (handicap 12 and below), Men’s B Division (handicap 13-19), Men’s C Division (handicap 20-24) and Ladies’ Division (handicap 30 and below) — will each receive a variety of prizes.

And the craziest thing about this championship is that the grand winner of the

event is not the player who amasses the most Stableford points, but the player who is 30th overall.

Eagles at KGPA

The tenth edition of the Golf Malaysia Eagle’s Championship organized by Golf Malaysia’s magazine is a tournament dedicated to golfers who have achieved an eagle during a round of golf and registered as a member of Golf Malaysia Magazine’s Eagles Club.

On June 28, a full field of competitors proudly donned themselves in a stylist Lyle and Scott shirt that has a large Eagle emblem on their chests, took off on a shot-gun start at the challenging Kelab Golf Perhidmatan Awam’s par-72 6,005 metres course.

When the day was done, Lam Kong Foo, Sharifudin Omar, Yau Wai Heng, Laila Hafidah Mohd Ali and Andrew Lim, emerged the A, B, C, Ladies and Invitational top finishers respectively with each taking home a host of prizes including various sets of Thermoskin therapeutic products. But, there was one more champion….this year’s edition also award a Golf Malaysia 30th Anniversary winner for the one who sits on overall 30th spot.

In no effort, Danavandhan Batumalai (13) was crowned the Grand Champion and was instantly spoilt with a one-night stay at Eastin Hotel’s luxury suite for two persons including a bottle of champagne and Singleton single-malt whisky.

“This is totally unexpected. I am so lucky and so happy,” said Danavandhan, still in shocked after receiving his prize courtesy of Eastin Hotel.

Long hitter Lam Kong Foo (7) amassed 40 points including four birdies prevailed both the Division A title (handicap 12 and below) and the Longest Drive challenge with his outstanding tee shot of 246.25 metres at hole 18. His strong endeavor also won him a Wilson Golf Bag sponsored by MST Golf.

“I played very well. My drives were solid. This is my second time playing in the Eagles championship and obviously I am proud and happy to be the Eagles champion,” said Lam who was trailed by three players with 37 points. After a countback, Ganesan Appavoo (9), Khor Soo Huat (12) and Dato’ Shamsudin Ismail (8), were declared second, third and fourth place winners respectively, while Chew Fook Kiong (12) took the fifth spot award.

In the men’s B Division (handicap 13 to 19), the champion’s trophy was decided on countback between Sharifudin Omar (13) and Nik Rahimi Nik Mohd Nawi (17) when the pair signed for 37 points. After the decisive countback, 42-year old Sharifudin triumphed over runner-up Nik Rahimi for the title.

The small difference in points accumulated between all top placing also shows that the participants provided stiff challenges amongst themselves. Due to the competitiveness of the golfers, the third, fourth and fifth place on this division was also determined through countback between three players who each carded 36 points. When the counting was done, Khoo Nee Cheong (14) finished ahead of Azman Wahab (13) and Eddy Eng (18) took up the final fifth.

Yau Wai Heng (20), the 2009 Division C champion, was again triumphant and managed to defend his title for the second time with 36 points.

Chasing closely with one point behind was Wong Yoon Seong (20) who secured second placing; and Lim Lean Kuan (21) was third after a countback from Amir Jamil (23) at 34 points. KK Seah (24), a regular participant in the Eagles tournament wrapped the fifth spot.

Although there were only six women participating in the Eagles Ladies event, all of them still put up an outstanding performance amidst the challenging KGPA layout.

A tight competition was seen especially between Laila Hafidah Mohd Ali (11) and Kim Jooy Eon (16). Laila, the 2008 Eagles Ladies champion once again emerged the winner amassing 37 points to edge out the Korean’s score of 35 points, revealed: “I have been playing in this tournament a few times and everything was so great. My game was further boosted with a birdie on the 16th hole”.

Kim, who was leading on the first six holes by two points, could not maintained her lead after missing some crucial putts on the home nine. “I couldn’t keep up with the challenging green but I will be back to compete in this tournament again next year,” she cautions.

Chin Pet Ha (19) who was the third place winner in last year’s tournament was happy to retain the same position with 31 points. Jessica Chan Sau Wan (16) took the fourth place winner with 30 points, while Ann Tan (14) the defending champion from last year’s tournament, close in with 29 points.

There was a tight finish among the golfers in the Eagles Invitational category between Andrew Lim (18), Samuel Chong (16) and Azhar Abdul Ghani (18) as each amassing 36 points. On countback, Lim became the champion with the runner-up spot went to Chong and Azhar in third. Philip Tan (22) was not to be outdone in fourth place, he also won the Nearest-to-Pin contest with a distance of 0.82 cm.

In other novelty events, Mat Nawi Ibrahim earned the Nearest-to-Bunker prize of a Wilson golf bag; while Han Chong Chin bagged two prizes winning the Bull’s Eye and the Nearest-to-Pin with a distance of 2.25 metres for a SeeMore Putter.

There was no taker for the hole-in-one prize of a Tiggo car sponsored by Chery Alado but there were plenty of lucky draw prizes, including Singleton Single Malt whisky, watches, and crates of Heineken and buffet dinners at the Eastin Hotel.

For golfers who have shot an Eagle before, now is their chance to compete in the 10th edition of Golf Malaysia Eagles Championship at the challenging 6,005 metres Kelab Golf Perkhidmatan Awam, Damansara, Kuala Lumpur.
The Golf Malaysia Eagles Championship is for golfers who had achieved an eagle during their rounds in Malaysia and subsequently registered with Golf Malaysia Magazine.

The tournament will be played under the Stableford format based on four division namely for men with handicap from 12 and below (Division A) from handicap 18 to 13 (Division B) and from 19 and above (Division C). The Ladies will make up the fourth category.

Entry Qualification

Divisions

The tournament field will consist of the Men’s and the Ladies’ division. The Men’s divisions will be further divided into three categories: A Division (handicap 12 and below); B Division (handicap 13-19) and C Division (handicap 20-24). The Ladies’ Division is for those with a handicap of 30 and below.

Format of Play / Programme of the Day

The mode of play is Stableford. The tournament will begin at 8:00 am on a shotgun start, unless otherwise decided by the organiser. Final course assignments will be distributed at the time of tournament registration.

Buggy / Caddie

Players are required to ride in a cart assigned to them. Each cart will be assigned with one caddie. Spectators are allowed on the course, but they are prohibited from interfering with play.

The 30 Novelties Challenge

The ball that lies nearest or on the target area/line (demarcated) at each hole will be recorded. There will be three winners for each Novelty contest.

Prizes / Awards

The tournament features THREE competitive divisions (A, B and C) for the Men and ONE division for the Ladies. The person who is 30th overall (Gross) shall be Golf Malaysia’s Crazy 30 Championship’s GRAND WINNER!

Ties

Ties for prizes will be broken using countback of the last 9, last 6, last 3 and last hole and then based on the lowest handicap. If the tie is not broken, the same system will be applied to the first 9.

The R&A Rules of Golf will govern play. Local rules of Kota Permai Golf & Country Club will apply.

Club Champions of Clearwater Sanctuary are the 2010 Champions

Mohd Shanizam Mohagi (handicap 0) and Janice Ling Hui Shin (13), the club champions of Clearwater Sanctuary Golf Resort in Batu Gajah, Perak, created history when they emerged victorious in their respective categories at the 2010 Golf Malaysia Champion of Champions Championship.

For the first time in twenty-four editions of this prestigious amateur tournament, club champions won on their home ground.

Mohd Shanizam’s victory came after a nail-biting three-way play-off with John Pang (3) and K. Murughan (5), after all three carded a total of 151 strokes over 36 holes.

Leading by two strokes up to the 16th hole on the second and last day of the championship, Mohd Shanizam said he was nervous during the play-off, which was his first. “Luckily I managed to control my nerves during the play-off. It was an unforgettable moment and I broke the tradition of not having the host win the championship.”

Pang, who edged out Murughan for the runner-up spot, related his experience during the thrilling play-off: “On the first play-off hole, I thought my ball would fall in for a birdie but unfortunately it didn’t. And on the second hole, I became more nervous since Hole No. 9 is considered one of the toughest par-4 holes on the course. Sad to say, I bogeyed the hole and the championship went to Shanizam.”

Murughan, however, was happy after his sixth play-off. He revealed: “I was not nervous at all during the play-off, but I pushed my tee shot to the right and ended up with a double bogey. Anyway, that’s all part of golf. I am just happy I played better than yesterday – much better!”

Overnight leader Sameer Raj Kukreja (4) from Titiwangsa Golf Club faltered in day two, carding a lacklustre 82 to finish fifth, one stroke behind Jimmy Chia Kee Joo (1) from Kota Permai Golf & Country Club, who shot identical 76s.

The Ladies’ Champion category was also witness to tense competition. Janice, who trailed eventual runner-up Sharon Lau May Yen (4) by two strokes when the second day started, came back with a respectable 3-over 75 to win the title by three shots.

“My putting finally came in. I was not that good off the tee but my short game saved me a lot,” Janice confided. “After knowing that I am the champion, I felt so relieved because I was under a lot of pressure and was also very nervous. I am also very happy now and would like to thank my parents and my coach, Terry Adcock, for guiding me to where I am now.”

The youngest player of the field, Sarfina Serethran (11) from Bukit Jalil Golf & Country Resort, was satisfied with shooting 79 and 81 for a 160.

“Being third is not bad at all. I could have done better but many of my putts lipped out. I will definitely try again next year,” said the 13-year-old Sarfina.

Seasoned golfer Datuk AS Khamis (7) won the Seniors’ Champions category after collecting a total of 165 over two days. This category was introduced for the first time in this annual tournament as a special treat in conjunction with Golf Malaysia Magazine’s 30th anniversary.

“It feels great to be the champion among the champions! And this championship is a true test of skill, patience and perseverance, as the course is playing long for us in the Seniors’ category,” said this champion from Nilai Springs Golf & Country Club. “To us, there is no par-4: all are par-5 and above! I ended up having to use my driver and 3-wood all the time.”

Battle for the Champion of Champions 2010 Title

The exciting, the biggest and the most prestigious amateur event in Malaysia is here again!

For the 24th time, Golf Malaysia Champion of Champions Championship will be staged and excitement is definitely mounting. This is THE event that has seen many of its winners, who were club champions, then turned professional and made their mark on regional and international golf scene, such as Roni Lim, P. Gunasegaran, Wong Hung Nung, Irene Yeoh and Cindy Lee. Perhaps the most popular figures are Lim Siew Ai, who is currently playing in the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) circuit in the US, and Khor Kheng Hwai, an Asian Tour touring professional.

The 2010 edition of this impressive two-day championship will again take place at the breathtaking Clearwater Sanctuary Golf Resort in Batu Gajah, Perak. Last year, this 6,482-metre, par-72 championship course was witness to brilliant golf by teenagers Mohd Azman of Bukit Jawi Golf Resort and Kelly Tan of Bukit Banang Golf Club, who captured the coveted Men’s Champion and Ladies’ Champion trophies respectively.

“It is an absolute pleasure for us to welcome the champion participants once again to our resort. I believe this tournament has a long line of history of making the players work hard to earn their title, including instances of a sudden-death play-off to determine the winner,” says Kenny Yap, the executive director of Clearwater Sanctuary Golf Resort.

“We hope the participants will have an enjoyable time in Perak. Our golf course is in its very good shape in spite of the dry season that we are experiencing now. We think the competition is going to be outstanding and very stiff, considering that the players are club champions from all over the nation.”

As a special treat in conjunction with Golf Malaysia Magazine’s 30th anniversary, a new Seniors’ Champion category will be introduced in this tournament, in addition to the existing Men’s Champion and Ladies’ Champion categories. Among those who have confirmed their participation in this brand-new division are Damai Laut Golf Club’s Ahmad Tarmizi Yusuf, Mohd Salleh Hassan of Royal Pahang Golf Club, Hj Mohd Salleh Sulaiman of Seri Mahkota Golf Club and Haji Hamdan Zambahari.

“I’m happy to be the Seniors’ Champion of three golf clubs and I will try my best to play well in this tournament,” says Haji Hamdan, who will be playing under the Kota Permai Golf & Country Club’s banner.

In the Men’s Champion division, expect a close battle between seasoned players such as Palm Garden GC’s Wong Pau San, Kota Permai GCC’s Jimmy Chia, Damai Laut GCC’s Wan Kamaruzzaman and Kelab Golf Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah’s Tan Vi Kung, along with Singapore’s Sham Chee Keong of Sembawang CC and Mimi Ho of Changi Golf Club.

Past conquerors of the Ladies’ Division at Golf Malaysia Champion of Champions Championship, like Datin Rahmah Arshad of Kelab Golf Negara Subang, June Yap of Kuala Lumpur GCC, Ireen Teng of Tropicana GCR and Palm Resort GC’s Marilyn Tan, will race for the top honour alongside last year’s runner-up Khairunhanisah Azlan Hanif of Kota Permai GCC.

Participants who attain the best Gross score over 36 holes in each of the three categories will be declared the champion of his or her division. Top ten finishers in the Men’s Champion category and top five finishers in both the Ladies’ Champion and the Seniors’ Champion divisions will be awarded fantastic prizes and certificate of merit.

Apart from Gross winners, the overall best Nett scorer over the two days of tournament will also be presented with great prizes. For golfers who pride themselves on accuracy and precision, a set of irons sponsored by Transview Golf will be theirs should they shoot an ace on any of the four par-3 holes on any day of the championship. Long hitters will also be glad to know that attractive prizes await them in the Nikon Longest Drive battle during this championship.

The Malaysian Golf Association (“MGA”), being the National Sports Association and the Governing Body for the sport of golf in Malaysia, is indeed extremely concerned with the unsubstantiated statements and views made by third parties with regards to the sanctioning of the US$6 million CIMB Asia Pacific Golf Classic and the registration of the Professional Golfers Association of Malaysia (“PGA”) and wishes to reiterate our stance:

1. The objects clauses of the Constitution & By-Laws (“the Rules”) of MGA clearly and unequivocally tasks MGA to encourage and promote the pursuit of the game of golf in Malaysia, to promote an annual Amateur Championship, the Malaysian Open Golf Championship for professional and other Championships meetings. MGA’s object clauses do not in any way distinguish the sport that is played by amateurs or professionals.

2. MGA’s object clauses further mandate it to ensure that the sport of golf played in Malaysia conforms with the rules of golf as prescribed for the time being by the Royal & Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews.

3. MGA’s constitution was approved by the Sports Commissioner’s Office and it is clear therefore from the Rules that it is MGA’s inherent constitutional right, to govern, supervise, manage and oversee the development of the sport of golf, notwithstanding the fact that the sport of golf may be played by Boys, Girls, Men, Ladies and Seniors.

4. The same rules of golf apply to all regardless of whether the sport of golf is played by individuals who are amateurs of if amateurs have moved on to achieve professional status. Championship meetings held in Malaysia cater for golfers who are amateurs or for those who have attained professional status. Examples of such Championship meetings include the Iskandar Johor Open, the Negeri Sembilan Masters, Terengganu Masters, Mercedes Benz Malaysian Masters & the Selangor Masters.

5. Over and above all Championship meets hosted and undertaken by our Affiliates (Golf Clubs) are sanctioned by MGA. In promoting these Championship meetings, MGA encourages third parties to promote and or host such events in Malaysia with the view to provide local golfers opportunities to enhance their skills and for local professionals an additional means to earn a livelihood.

6. MGA is a non-profit entity, wherein its members do not profit neither enrich themselves unlike some other sports entities that cater for the specific needs of its members and or their players. The proposed registration of PGA is a step in the right direction, solely and exclusively tasked with managing, developing and sustaining its members’ welfare and livelihood.

7. Herein lay the material difference between MGA’s onerous obligations in the governance of golf in Malaysia and to that of PGA. PGA is no more than a private entity set out to cater for the specific interest of its members only. It cannot therefore be hardly true to suggest that it represents golf in Malaysia.

8. Be that as it may, it cannot be perceived that there shall exist two governing bodies nor two sanctioning entities one that of MGA and the other that of PGA. The word “Sanction” has been so misplaced and misinterpreted by various parties in the past and MGA reckons that this “uncertainty” needs to be put to rest once and for all.

9. Datuk Thomas Lee should have known best as a former president of MGA, who during his tenure of presidency, had championed and advocated that the right of sanction shall remain within the exclusive domain and jurisdiction of MGA. To blow hot and cold at this late stage when the defunct MPGA is in shambles does not augur well for the growth and development of golfers who have turned professional.

10. A recent and apparent example of a potential ‘hiccup” that may be destined to crystallize when third parties undermine existing sanction procedures set out by MGA, can be seen in the recent announcement of the hosting of a Championship meeting in the name and style of “CIMB Asia Pacific Golf Classic” scheduled for to be held at the Mines Resort & Golf Club on October 28th to 31st 2010. It is interesting to note that the Iskandar Johor Open, a regular scheduled and premier Championship meet of which MGA has sanctioned in the past, is also scheduled for the same weekend.

11. The clash of dates has risen for want on the part of the Event Manager/Promoter for not seeking sanction from MGA. This blatant disregard to adhere to fundamental compliance requirements is yet another example when the development and supervision of the sport of golf can be further jeopardized and compromised if unchecked. As third parties have vested commercial interest in hosting/promoting these meets, the conflict of interest issue is real and apparent.

12. If the sport of golf in Malaysia has to develop in an orderly fashion and manner then this “bickering” and unethical practices by parties who have little or no understanding of the issues on hand must cease immediately. MGA has of recent times, charted new initiatives to cater for the many stakeholders and partners involved in the holistic development of the sport of golf. There is sufficient ‘room’ for all, who have a genuine vision, desire and commitment to embrace good governance and to take the sport of golf to the next level. Anything less is not acceptable.

The All-new PGA of Malaysia

After a period of uncertainty due to the infighting and a lacklustre Malaysia Professional Golfers Association (MPGA), an ad-hoc committee was appointed by the Sports Commissioner to look into ways and means of uplifting the sport of professional golf and to bring order and decorum to the ranks of professional golfers in the country. Apart from a total revamp of MPGA, the committee also recommended that the whole golf industry should be brought in to focus on moving professional golf to a new level of professionalism, with greater transparency and more efficient administration of the sport.

The result is the formation of an all-new governing body for professional golf in Malaysia, the Professional Golfers Association of Malaysia (PGA of Malaysia), which was officially launched in late December 2009 by the Minister of Youth and Sports, Datuk Ahmad Shabery Cheek.

“We want to bring Malaysian golf to international standards. In order to do that, [Malaysian professionals] have to win and produce the top ten players in the region,” Datuk Ahmad Shabery said, adding that Malaysian golf has to be profit-making.

The PGA of Malaysia is mapping out a strategy to provide training, education and professional development framework to ensure well qualified and accredited professionals are available to grow and develop golf in Malaysia at all levels, from junior participation to professional tournaments.

The Pro Tem Committee Member of PGA of Malaysia, Dato’ Thomas Lee, said in his speech during the launch that the objectives of this new PGA of Malaysia can only be achieved if proper funding comes through to aid the association, especially in the running of tournaments and the development clinics that the PGA aspires to run.

“While the government has been very supportive, we now appeal to the private sector to contribute equally to the development of a huge industry that can contribute positively to our economy.”

This new association is also committed to look after the interests of all professional golfers and is committed to hold at least two tournaments a month.

Dreams Come True at Impian

Wan Kamarulzaman Wan Chik, Nordin Amat Dewan, Mohamad Rodzi Sulaiman and Jessie Teng Kim Heng all wore the champion’s crown at the second leg of the 2009 Golf Malaysia Aces of Aces Championship, held at the lush 6,254-metre Impian Golf & Country Club in Kajang, Selangor, on 11 November.

In the A Division (handicaps 0 to 12), Wan Kamarulzaman Wan Chik (6) accumulated 20 Stableford (Modified) points on the Golden Nine and another 19 points on the Negara Nine to dislodge defending champion Michael Lee Thiam Soon (8) by one point.

The elated Wan Kamarulzaman, who walked away with the champion’s trophy, a Nikon Laser Rangefinder worth RM1,588, a treatment voucher at Men’s Skin Centres, a bottle of Black ‘99’ Whisky plus an invite to attend the Extended DISC (Malaysia) workshop, declared: “Everything went well for me today – all my shots were ‘champion’ shots. I’ve been playing for 20 years now, and this is my second time in the Ace of Aces Championship. In my first outing, I was third. I came today with no practice rounds, and just played [the round]. My game was just average, with two birdies. I guess I must have the champion’s luck!”

Lee, although slightly disappointed for failing to defend his title, was satisfied with his game as his game has declined lately. “I didn’t have any practice round before coming to the tournament either, but I still got by with two birdies and a lot of pars. I really enjoyed myself today,” he shared.

In the B Division (handicaps 13 to 18), Nordin Amat Dewan (18) wrestled the crown from Alex CF Kee (15) and Wan Mohd Kamal (19), on countback, when all three carded 37 points.

Nordin, who credited his win to his great tee shots and a good caddie, disclosed: “Although I have won prizes at many amateur events since I started golf in 2003, I have never become the champion. Today I get my first champion win. The feeling is great!”

Meanwhile, the third placed Wan Mohd Kamal thought he played his best golf game ever in this leg of Golf Malaysia Ace of Aces Championship. He confirmed this with gusto: “Although it rained earlier in the morning, my game was solid from start till end. My ball never went haywire at all today – it managed to find the fairways and the greens even from the rough. This is my third time coming in third in the B Division. I am not satisfied until I am number one, so watch out: I’ll be back next year!”

In the C Division category, which was for golfers with a handicap of 19 to 24, Mohamad Rodzi Sulaiman (20) amassed 35 points to beat R Muralitharan Rajagopal (22) and Danial Badderon (20) by one point.

He said: “I’d rate my game today as being usual: I played par golf today but not to my handicap. For the first few holes, I played double because I couldn’t adapt to fast green speed. After that, my game was alright even though not fantastic. But then again, I am so happy to be the champion! This is my fourth outing in Ace of Aces Championship, with my last ‘podium’ finish being second at Kota Permai in 2007.”

Muralitharan, who took second on countback, felt he didn’t play that well. “I am now feeling very excited and very surprised. This is my second Ace of Aces tournament and my second time playing at Impian, and I got second! I’m really happy with this win.”

In the Ladies’ category, Jessie Teng (20) surged to the top when she returned 37 points, two points ahead of her nearest contender Thoo Lee Wah (17) and three points ahead of Ann Tan (13) and Norlida Anis (11).

All participants also had a chance to win FusionExcel products in the FusionExcel Novelty events. Both Hamdan Nordin and the long-hitting Lim Bu Keong were rewarded with a FusionExcel pendant worth RM595 each for their effort on Hole No. 14, which were a distance of 2.9 metres to the bunker and a commanding 253.4-metre drive in the Nearest-to-Bunker and Longest Drive race respectively.

In the FusionExcel Nearest-to-Pin battle on Hole No. 2, Leonard Tan got his golf ball 2.3 metres to the pin to also win a FusionExcel pendant. Not to be outdone, Abdul Malek Husin also grabbed a FusionExcel pendant when he sent his ball to a distance of 3.2 metres to the pin in another Nearest-to-Pin contest on Hole No. 7.

Lui Seng sent his ball six centimetres to the line on Hole No. 5 to win a FusionExcel bracelet worth RM625, while Khuganesh Kerisnan took home a FusionExcel flask worth RM630 for placing his ball 0.73 metres to the pond, also on Hole No. 5.

For participants who did not win in their respective categories and in the Novelty events, several rounds of lucky draws managed to put a big smile on their face, as they had another chance to win other lucrative prizes, including two Stay-and-Play packages for two at the luxurious Sofitel Angkor Phokeethra Golf & Spa Resort in Siem Reap, Cambodia, valued at USD540 (about RM1,890).

Four Aces to the Fore at Golf Malaysia Ace of Aces Championship 2009 (Zone 1)

The quartet of Mohd Fazly Rosli, Tan Boon Him, Rozailan Kamil Mohd Taib and Annie Yew Lee Ling beat a full field of holes-in-one participants to become champions at the first leg of the 2009 Golf Malaysia Ace of Aces Championship on 1 November.

Mohd Fazly Rosli (12) edged out Soon Yaw Keong (11) and K Perumal (8) on countback to emerge champion of the A Division (handicaps 0 to 12). The trio each posted 38 Stableford (modified) points on the 6,154-metre Bukit Kemuning Golf & Country Resort in Kota Kemuning, Selangor.

“I am very happy to win today. I’d like to thank my friend K Perumal for this win, because he was the one who motivated and encouraged me to play well,” said the elated Mohd Fazly, who walked away with the champion’s trophy, a Nikon Laser Rangefinder worth RM1,588, a treatment voucher at Men’s Skin Centres and a bottle of Black ‘99’ Whisky. He also gained a seat to the Extended DISC (Malaysia) workshop.

Soon, who hails from Sabah, flew to Kuala Lumpur just to take part in the Golf Malaysia Ace of Aces Championship. He shared: “There are so many good players today, so I really didn’t expect I’d be the runner-up. When it was announced that I am the runner-up, I was just so happy!”

The fun-filled Golf Malaysia Ace of Aces Championship, which is organised auspiciously on every 1st and 11th November, is open exclusively for golfers who have achieved an ace on Malaysian courses. Between July 1986 and October 2009, there are more than 15,900 holes-in-one recorded at over 207 golf courses in the country and registered with Golf Malaysia Magazine’s Hole-in-One Club, the only known archive for ace achievers in Malaysia.

The first leg of this championship, which is played under the Stableford System 36 (modified) scoring format, took place on 1 November at Bukit Kemuning Golf & Country Resort in Kota Kemuning, Selangor. The second leg will be held at Impian Golf & Country Club in Kajang on 11 November.

In the B Division (handicaps 13 to 18), Tan Boon Him (16) wrestled the crown from Ariff Mitik when they both carded 37 points. The visibly joyous Tan, who has played in three editions of Golf Malaysia Ace of Aces Championship, said: “Although this is only my second time playing in Bukit Kemuning, I birdied my first hole! I am really happy I won the B Division. As I am from Johor, I made this trip to KL just to play in this championship. I guess my win is well worth the journey!”

Ten other golfers jostled for prizes in the B Division when they each managed 36 points. Upon countback, Mohd Afrizan Husain (16), Dato’ Shamsuar Mahmood (18) and Chan Kam Choon (14) were placed third, fourth and fifth respectively.

“I am happy with my game today, as I used the Nikon Laser Rangefinder [on loan from Nikon Malaysia] during my round. It was very effective! I could see clearly where I should hit to, and I’m getting my own Nikon Laser Rangefinder right after this tournament!” the excited Dato’ Shamsuar revealed.

In the C Division category, which was for golfers with a handicap of 19 to 24, Rozailan Kamil Mohd Taib (20) amazed himself when he grabbed the top spot after amassing 37 points.

“I didn’t expect that I’d win today as I didn’t have any practice before coming to this event today. In fact, I just checked out from the hospital two weeks ago after undergoing treatment for my back pain,” shared Rozailan.

Thum Choy Cheen (23), who battled See Joo Hock (19) for the runner-up spot in the C Division after both accumulated 36 points, thought that the putting green at Bukit Kemuning GCR was very fast. “My flight mate, Alex Chuah, and I kept encouraging each other to think positive throughout the round. This paid off, as I am second while he is fifth in the C Division!”

In the Ladies’ category, another countback was needed to break the tie when Annie Yew Lee Ling (21) and Ashvin Kaur A/P Harbaksh Singh (12) both returned 35 points. Upon countback, Yew was awarded the crown.

“I am a bit frustrated to get second. Last year I was also the runner-up in this event [held at SSG Beringin Golf Club in Lembah Beringin]. I guess it’s just my luck!” lamented Ashvin.

All participants also had a chance to win FusionExcel pendants worth RM595 each in the Novelty events. Rosdi Haron won the FusionExcel Nearest-to-Bunker prize when he sent his golf ball 2.35 metres to the bunker, while Ong Chee Chang’s powerful 227 metres on the 375-metre Hole No. 4 gave him the FusionExcel Longest Drive honour. Ong also won the FusionExcel Nearest-to-Pond prize when he sent his ball 11 metres to the pond on Hole No. 10.

The FusionExcel Nearest-to-Pin race was won by Ariff Mitik when his golf ball landed 11 feet 2 inches from the pin on Hole No. 6. Next, the FusionExcel Nearest-to-Line honour was taken by Mohd Khairi, who swung to victory when he sent his tee shot 0.4 centimetres to the line on Hole No. 10. Amidst all the fun, however, no one managed to shoot an ace to bring home the all-new Panasonic Panaboard.

Participants who did not manage any wins in their respective categories and in the Novelty events had another chance of winning other lucrative prizes during the lucky draws. Prizes include two Stay-and-Play packages for two at the luxurious Sofitel Angkor Phokeethra Golf & Spa Resort in Siem Reap, Cambodia, valued at USD540 (about RM1,890).

The Rule Committee has approved the use of distance-measuring devices, such as the Nikon Laser Rangefinder 350G, in the upcoming 2009 Golf Malaysia Ace of Aces Championship.

However, distance-measuring devices that also gauge gradient, wind speed, temperature etc., are not allowed. The player will be in breach of Rule 14-3, and subject to disqualification, regardless of whether any such additional function is actually used.

Come Join the Golf Malaysia Ace of Aces Championship!

The euphoria of achieving a hole-in-one can only be rivalled by a tournament specially dedicated to ace makers: Golf Malaysia Ace of Aces Championship!

This unique championship is the world’s only event where the entry requirement is having scored an ace. The first leg of this exciting event will be held on 1 November 2009 at Bukit Kemuning Golf & Country Resort in Kota Kemuning, while the next leg is at Impian Golf & Country Club in Kajang on 11 November 2009. Among the current 15,800 ace golfers registered with Golf Malaysia’s Hole-in-One Club, only 280 will make the field on a first come, first served basis.

The tournament, currently into its 20th year, is played under the Stableford System 36 (Modified) format of competition in four categories. For men, they will fight for the crown in A Division (handicaps 0 to 12), B Division (handicaps 13 to 18) or C Division (handicaps 19 to 24). The fourth category is for the ladies with handicaps 0 to 30.

Bukit Kemuning Golf & Country Resort, the host for the first leg, has taken a major approach in making their facility a haven for golfers. “My team and I are excited to show the Ace of Aces participants how grand our facility is. The greens are rolling smooth and true and in tip top condition,” offers Steven Eng, the club manager.

Coveted trophies, along with attractive prizes such as Nikon Laser Rangefinders, Nature Valley hampers, FusionExcel accessories, luxury time pieces and others, will go to each victorious golfer. And to make sure no one goes home empty-handed, a lucky draw will be conducted, with many delightful prizes awaiting those lucky golfers. “Thanks to modern technology, essential distance to the green can be measured using the basic rangefinders. We will loan ten units of the Nikon Laser Rangefinder 350G to the participants, based on a first come, first served basis and on per flight basis,” says Juliana Cheah, the organiser and CEO of Golf (Malaysia) Publications Sdn Bhd, the company that publishes the renowned Golf Malaysia Magazine.

Scenic Seaside Golf at Phokeethra Krabi

When I stepped onto the tee of the first hole, a vista of lush greenery and sparkling azure sea opened up before my eyes. I closed my eyes for a second, drinking in the fresh breeze from the Andaman Sea that playfully twirled my hair, while the applause of waves when they meet the white sandy beach greeted my ears…Fantabulous: I must be in paradise... :-)

Actually, I was at Phokeethra Golf Krabi, a stunning nine-hole layout located adjacent to the luxurious Sofitel Krabi Phokeethra Golf & Spa Resort. Situated on the edge of the beautiful Klong Muang beach and extending towards the foot of the Naga Head Mountain, Phokeethra Golf Krabi offers not only exciting golf but also breathtaking mountain and sea views. This par-28, 1,367-yard walking course winds its way through lakes and streams as it climbs along a hillside slope, becoming progressively complex and interesting. Along the way, you’ll find lots of water hazards, ambushing bunkers and tough putting surfaces. Although this is a nine-hole challenge, believe me, it really does test your accuracy and skills!

HOLE 1: par-3, 120 yards (white), 113 yards (red)

The opening hole, according to the scorecard, is the easiest with an index rating of 9. From the tee box, it’s a pretty straight journey to the green, but after that you will face a real challenge, as the whole putting surface contains hard-to-read, tricky amounts of break. You will definitely need accuracy here.

HOLE 2: par-3, 89 yards (white), 83 yards (red)

The tee box of Hole 2, the shortest hole of the layout, is the nearest to the beach. If you are also a sea person, like yours truly, you’ll definitely get distracted by the inviting sights and sounds of the Andaman Sea. My advice: forget the sea for a while and concentrate, since wind is a factor here and you will need accurate approach shots, as the crowned green causes ‘fractionally off’ approaches to fall away from their target.

Hole 3: par-3, 135 yards (white), 110 yards (red)

The picturesque Hole 3 presents a formidable test, as a shiny lake sits in front of its charming green. Choose your club wisely on this index-3 hole, as you not only need to carry the water, but also keep the ball on the putting surface. Three bunkers stood at attention, ready to catch those who overshot. Once on the green, however, take some time to admire the view: it’s certainly worth it!

HOLE 4: par-4, 265 yards (white), 245 yards (red)

The longest hole on the course gives you a chance to show off your driving power. Also the second toughest, this dogleg-right challenges you to cross a stream before you can arrive at its elevated green, with the Naga Head Mountain as its backdrop. Do watch out for its gradual elevation, which can make you feel as if you’re putting for the first time.

HOLE 5: par-3, 152 yards (white), 142 yards (red)

After battling Hole 4, you’ll arrive at this beautiful uphill test. Water crosses the front of its fairway, while the lush Naga Head Mountain presents an impressive ‘wall’ on your left. Go straight forth and you should land safely on the green. If you go slightly left, a bunker catches you. If you go slightly right, another bunker awaits! If you’re on and you think you’re safe…well, think again. The contoured and rolling surface of this uphill green requires a large amount of accuracy, guaranteeing you a real putting challenge.

A delightful flight of stone steps will lead you down from the green of Hole 5 to the tee of the sixth.

HOLE 6: par-3, 157 yards (white), 151 yards (red)

Enjoy the view as you descend the stone steps connecting the two holes, but do start planning for carefully evaluated ball placement – you will need that in order to succeed on this downhill hole. A vertical drop of more than twenty feet can trick the eye, so choose your club carefully. And remember to be wary of the three majestic bunkers guarding the green on each of the three sides.

HOLE 7: par 3, 149 yards (white), 132 yards (red)

Before you tee off from the seventh hole, look up and behold the magnificent seaside view before you. Then, with this splendid image still in your mind, swing away and keep up that happy mood. Why? Well, water and bunkers protect half of its green so this is a real ‘risk and reward’ challenge: it’s your gamble! And you should know that the pin is on the right of this green…that makes life more interesting, doesn’t it?

HOLE 8: par-3, 130 yards (white), 120 yards (red)

Bunkers aplenty here on Hole 8! These sandy contraptions and the swaying trees combine to present yet another optical challenge, as your approach shot may seem shorter than it really is.

Once you’re through to Hole 8’s slightly downhill green, you’ll be faced with another interesting putting test. Good putters should have an added advantage here.

HOLE 9: par-3, 170 yards (white), 162 yards (red)

The expression ‘save the best for last’ rings true here. The last hole of the layout, which is also the course’s longest par-3, is branded with an index rating of 1. With the Andaman Sea behind you as you tee off, wind might help carry your shot over the water guarding the right side of the green and the bunker sitting right in front of the green. If you manage to clear these major hazards, don’t get too excited. The complex deck green also ensures a tricky putt if you finish on the wrong level!

And the Bottom Line is...
Play this relatively short layout once and I’ll bet you’ll return to the resort with a shake of the head, a smile across your face and a burning desire to replay it. Even writing this review made this writer want to hop on a plane and fly to Krabi right away, just for another go on this course! :-P
